25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

What nobody seems to have tried is "make a society pleasant enough that people actually want to raise their kids in it." Coincidentally, a goal incompatible with "turn everyone into a border guard and massively ramp up the racism."

Another two questions: why did Stephen Pollard use the Jewish Chronicle, a media outlet he helped purchase for unknown owners, to defend Nigel Farage’s overt and blatant history of antisemitism? And why have no mainstream UK Jewish organisations condemned Pollard for excusing antisemitism?

If we're doing the whole 'Corbyn was responsible for Brexit' shtick again, surely the *most responsible* for Brexit would have been his Shadow Minister for Brexit?

One 'Sir Keir Starmer QC'?

Another way of putting this would be to say that the people the British media recognises and promotes as authorities entitled to speak on behalf of Jewish people are all very right wing cranks, and so they are basically fine with Farage because he too hates all the people that they despise.
This could be boiled down to "Guys, you're embarrassing me". That explains why it's in Jewish News and not the Guardian, but it also explains why Freedland is prepared to admit for once that the "official community's" attitude has always been political.

JONATHAN FREEDLAND: Why Britain’s Jewish leaders are silent on Farage’s schoolyard antisemitism
While the Reform UK leader and his allies smear accusers as liars, the Board, JLC and HET remain mute, fearing the wrath of a rising politician

It’s hard to exaggerate how bad the situation is in the UK. There are eight people on hunger strike and David Lammy recently claimed he wasn’t even aware of it. That hunger strikers may actually die is barely even news.

I know Time's argument is that Person of the Year isn't about being "the best" it's about being the most influential, hence people like Hitler have won, but man, that cover is doing a *lot* of editorializing in defense of these grifter assholes, and including Musk is straight up offensive.

Farage thinks I'm a maniac?

Starmer thinks the Greens are nuts?

Badenoch thinks I'm weird?

Once you reject the critique of the left (that Starmer was never popular, despite a supportive press, and that 2024 was an anti-govt vote that split the right) you are simply left baffled at the truculent behaviour of British voters.

The Board of Deputies could destroy Farage, a politician that has credibly said some of the most atrocious antisemitic comments uttered in recent British history by an elected MP, by releasing a statement condemning him, but they don’t. They did previously, in 2019, over far less. Why is that?

It's actually incredible how much the average person despises AI and how divorced from reality these CEOs are about their role that they think they can just force it down everyone's throat irrespective

The company said the moment served as "an important learning" as it explored "the effective use of AI"

can't get over the team behind the mcdonald's ad wanting credit for all the late nights and long hours they spent prompting for clips. you've somehow invented a form of ersatz creativity that recreates the suffering inherent to all creative work without any valuable output or intellectual growth
there’s just a certain type of person who would show up to your writer’s group wanting praise for presenting work but violently rejecting any form of constructive criticism that might improve it, and that right there is the target market for AI

👇🎯 Again, a system of government in which the only way in real time to remove a lawless authoritarian executive is an extraordinary mechanism, requiring huge supermajorities, that has never been successfully used, & everyone rules out ex ante as poison, is not actually a functioning democracy.
There's a Hill bubble narrative, posing as savvy realism, in treating impeachment as some radioactive poison and so Democrats must squash any talk of it. But there's zero evidence for that. No polls back it up, nor recent history. It's all just pundit-brained conventional wisdom eating its own tail.
