Years ago I read an interview with the world's (then) oldest man. 120. He didn't start smoking until he was 60 (couldn't afford it before then), and wasn't going to quit now. His advice was to "eat a lot of oranges, and have a lot of sex."

Every time they talk about USS Excelsior having an experimental trans warp drive in the original films, I think about how he's probably the only starship in the Federation with masc pronouns.
Star Trek never directly explains this science but "warp core" is simply a later subgenre of warp that has a faster and more aggressive sound.
