We’re sure you recall in years past you’d have to choose your console version and stick with it, but Pokemon Legends: Z-A and now Metroid Prime 4 being released for both consoles AFTER the Switch 2 launch is a great sign; either game could have easily been exclusive.

We love it! Not sure if the idea to upgrade existing games came first or if games released near the boundary were the cause, but the fact they came up with the Upgrade Pack idea at all is very consumer friendly, and (as you indicated) somewhat unlike Nintendo.

It’s been mostly a Fortnite machine for us because of how poorly the OG Switch handles that game.

This is a stopgap to be able to play digital software on any Switch, but it only works for the account that owns it, and won’t allow other people on the console to play it: youtu.be/IpLeh4IggtI

Virtual Game Cards seem like a good idea in concept, but Nintendo seems to presume everyone will system transfer their Switch to a Switch 2. If your primary account remains on an original Switch, it becomes very difficult to play digital software on Switch 2! What a nightmare.

We’re hoping to put together and upload a YouTube short demonstrating this compatibility later today! Stay tuned.

It’s conceptually similar to how black Game Boy Color carts worked on the original Game Boy, but provided additional features if played on a Game Boy Color.

If you’re ever not sure, you can check the blurb on the bottom of the Switch 2 Edition game case to be sure, or get more details at support.nintendo.com/switch2/upgradepack

Nope, it’s legit!

All Switch 2 Edition carts work in the original Switch; it contains the Switch game as well as the Upgrade Pack. It’s kind of like a black Game Boy Color cartridge that can work on the OG Game Boy!

There’s a blurb on the bottom of the very ugly case art of all compatible games:

Go physical with Metroid Prime 4; the cart will work in a Switch. It’s only $10 more, and you’ve future-proofed yourself.

Not sure if it would have an identity crisis were I to later insert a Switch 2 cart version.

We look forward to testing this more after Metroid Prime 4 drops next week! 4/4

Also if like me us got a digital upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition of any of your Switch 1 games, the icon still shows up as black like a Switch 1 cart does. Technically accurate, as that’s the cart we would insert! 3/4

But now instead of the solid blue icon we get a little came card and label. Even better, Switch 1 software is black while Switch 2 software is red, just like the real thing. 2/4

We are going to try to put something (a video or podcast) together as a memorial, but for now we just want to express our condolences and encourage donations to her funeral fund. The world lost a real one.
