We hope the dataset can be used in multiple research topics including scientific figure understanding and retrieval, 3D technical drawing reconstruction, technical drawing classification, and generative multimodal design models for innovation.

Because the dataset was automatically generated using a pipeline consisting of multiple machine-learning-based modules, we carefully estimated and verified the error rates. The overall error rate is less than 11.7%.

To build the dataset, we overcame the technical challenges of accurately segmenting compound figures, extracting semantic information from captions, and associating figures and semantic information.

The paper builds a dataset consisting of more than 2.7 million technical drawings with 132,890 object names and 22,394 viewpoints extracted from 14 years of US design patent documents.
