Hello World
I'm a scientist and chemist, a juggler and long distance cyclist... and a priest in the Church of England. I blog and microblog about cycling, faith, and the ministry I have here in Slaithwaite and Marsden (West Yorkshire, UK) - and I've recently discovered the joy of 35mm photography.
Black and white photograph of a bicycle in the porch of a camping hut, as seen from the bed. Background out of focus. Pentax MX with 50mm f1.4 lens. Ilford XP2 film.

Going against the flow. Changing the narrative. Rebelling against motor normativity.

B&W photo showing a metal mesh fence, with a square hole cut out. Through the hole a river tributary called The Birket can be seen flowing away into the distance, with a motorway flyover on the horizon crossing the water.

"Free at the point of use"
🥰
...free at the point of use is such a blessing isn't it, the NHS, Citizens Advice, emergency services. Doesn't matter how much money a person has, they all get the same excellence of service: or at least do when those services are not stretched.

I love the way the orange morning sunshine streams into the building through the east window, illuminating the stories the stained glass shares. Stunningly beautiful.

Morning Prayer with other people! The novelty!

I'm fairly sure God does know the bus times, of course the prophetic tradition is to look back and say, "yes, there was a bus". This saves us from false prophets who tell you a bus is coming when it isn't really. None of this is actually useful for catching a bus though. The internet *might* help.

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

Cycling around the Benefice on this blustery day, reaching out to God and praying for all. I feel like a mote dancing in a storm. All is beyond me. So, I just put one pedal stroke after another.

O God, the whole world before you is like a speck that tips the scales, and like a drop of morning dew that falls on the ground. You are merciful to all, for you can do all things, and you overlook people’s sins, so that they may repent. For you love all things that exist...

Marsden and the moorland of the South Pennines in the background, on an overcast but sunny day. West Yorkshire landscape: fields, dry stone walls, moors.

For your immortal spirit is in all things. Therefore you correct little by little those who trespass, and you remind and warn them of the things through which they sin, so that they may be freed from wickedness and put their trust in you, O God.

Praying for everyone in Marsden and Slaithwaite:

In the darkness of unknowing,
when your love seems absent,
draw near to us, O God,
in Christ forsaken,
in Christ risen,
our Redeemer and our Lord

I'm guessing there is a lot of background negotiation between Dom, the local council, local active travel peeps, and the police.. all before this goes ahead. My gut feeling is that this is supported for *political* and *active travel* reasons. It feels rebellious though, and that's cool.

Police were cool: bunny hopping curbs and weaving through oncoming traffic on their motorbikes, to keep us safe. Turn a blind eye to the scallywags smoking dope and wheelying the wrong way down the street. It was joyous chaos!

7h 42m for a 200 is flying! Best I've achieved is 8hrs... 200km downhill with a tailwind.

I watched a family plant a tree and pour the ashes of their deceased loved one into the ground. It made me sad. Within three months the tree was dead. Cremation ashes are sterile: all the sunlit environmental value of our remaining physical form incinerated. When did we think this was good?

They need another bicycle?

Is there a minimum size to feet in order to qualify?

We'll still be able to follow you though? But you'll have more control over that I'm guessing. I'm not sure how much you moderate this space for us... never having made the link between accounts. However: hope you'll still be *here*.

To be fair, it is certainly a dangerous hike. It's an insane cycle and a nightmare spacehooper route. I hope those who knew what they were doing are okay, and I hope Claire Balding isn't meandering around up there. 🫣

I think your group ride really sucked: it didn't look like a group ride, it looks like some macho idiot couldn't place themselves. I may have been a bit defensive about Audax. Sorry. 🥺

At last, I made it to Niagara Falls and now on the GO train home. The final distance broke the 150 km mark when my previous high was 115 km. Had to walk my bike up a couple of brutal hills up the Niagara Escarpment though. #BikeTO #BikeSky strava.app.link/DMLBhEY5dXb
