Thanks Jeremy, very much appreciated especially coming from you!

Tbh I have no idea 😅 I will search about it!

With this dinosaur name we wanted to tribute culture and heritage of Portugal :)

However, “Papo Seco” was already established as a name in the literature :)

Similar cousins, and yet so different animals!
See the skull of my new species Cariocecus bocagei -published this week- at the foot of the Iguanodon statue at @naturalsciences-be.bsky.social for #fossilfriday

A new species of plant-eating dinosaur, named Cariocecus bocagei, has been discovered in Portugal, according to the Institute of Natural Sciences.

However, the color pattern of Kratos was not ideal to what I had in mind. I prepared some palettes based on birds, but then I had an idea. I am a huge @criticalrole.bsky.social fan, and I wanted to tribute them. This, I applied Grog’s tones to the official reconstruction by Victor Carvalho!

Cariocecus was the Lusitania God of War in the pre-Roman age. It was therefore instantaneous the association with the famous videogame franchise of Kratos 😁 hence, during the first days after deciding this new genus name, I had fun making this fake PS5 cover!

Please welcome Cariocecus bocagei! A new, basal hadrosauroid from the early Cret. of Portugal! This guy is known from a pretty nice skull, which makes it one of the best ornithopod fossils from Iberia so far! I loved during this little portrait for main author Filippo Bertozzo...

in a bit, in live with @paleontologizing.bsky.social !
paleontologizing.bsky.social
We've got another BRAND-NEW DINOSAUR to discuss on #Twitch today -- Cariocecus bocagei -- and we'll be interviewing the lead author on the paper (@fbertpaleo.bsky.social) to get the inside scoop on what makes this new iguanodont so special.

Join us at twitch.tv/paleontologizing to watch & chat!
Twitch screenshot of me in my office, with a plethora of iguanodont material on the wall behind me -- 3D-printed and cast skulls and hands, framed photos and illustrations from papers, etc.

And later in the day (European night, American afternoon) you'll find me in the live of @paleontologizing.bsky.social to discuss more about it!!! Possibly around 2.30pm California time :)

This is, enjoy!

ah, I was forgetting: Cariocecus is named after the Lusitanian GOD OF WAR Cariocecus (before been renamed into Mars/Ares). And bocagei refers to 19th century Portuguese zoologist José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage.
Actually, I'll show u something funny in the next days on the genus name XD 13/x
fbertpaleo.bsky.social
And we also compiled a paleobiogeography analysis of Iguanodontia, but I'm curious to see how it will evolve with more data and specimens! So, c'mon, gimme more 😁😁12/x

Finally, with the help of Ricardo Araujo, we propose for the first time a detailed characterization of the inner structure of the inner ear. This project specifically might continued if I'll win a certain grant...11/x

Furthermore, the supraorbital membrane articulates solely with the lacrimal, and not with the prefrontal as in other ornithischians. This placed the bone ina lower level in the orbit, likely giving it a "mean" look 10/x
fbertpaleo.bsky.social
Fabio Manucci was the first one to suggest that the visible connective tissue marks could have been related to the sporb membrane, and he reconstructed it in the assembled skull. Don Cerio of the John Hopksin University helped us in describing it and comparing the structure to that of birds 9/x
fbertpaleo.bsky.social
However, I think the most interesting paleobio result we obtained is the reconstruction of the supraorbital membrane. This is a structure visible in birds as well, connective tissue covering the eye and achoring with supraorbital (the "eyebrow"), prefrontal, frontal, and postorbital 8/x

We used a new matrix to detect the phylogenetical position of SHN.832. Cariocecus resulted as a basal hadrosauroid together with Brightstoneus and Comptonatus. However, I am curious to see how it will change in future projects of mine (😏😏), especially adding Istiorachis and other species 7/x
fbertpaleo.bsky.social
Cariocecus resulted to be indeed a new species. Crazy features are: jugal and maxilla are co-ossified, and the supraorbital articulates solely with the lacrimal! We were able tor econstruct via microCt the replacement teeth, brain and inner ear. I digitize the models, assembling them in Blender 6/x
