Majestic! I know Homer is a just a stand in but I can already see a ferocious haggis go after this calf!

Preview of my latest #paleoart piece: a baby bison flees the deadliest predator of Ice Age Europe. Harrowing, harrowing stuff.

For people not aware, Lemuria is a spec evo project of the #paleostream community. It follows the evolution of organisms living on the fictional continent of Lemuria (fusion of Madagascar and India) from the Cretaceous to the Pleistocene. We are in the Oligocene #LemuriaChallenge

Crocodilians venture rarely into this realm of moss and fog and so large carnivore niches are all filled by mammals, in this case a large marsupial patrols it's territory, looking for prey maybe in the shape of a large rail?

To cool off we leave the tropics and enter the Temperate Pluvial Forests to the south of Lemuria. Between ancient trees we come across a fantastic sight, as a mixed herd of noasaurids and large multituberculates come to the shore of a small stream to drink.

Note that we got some taxa into this piece by making them being transported by army ants. Ants are an incredibly important part of modern day ecosystems, they probably consume more biomass than even humans and in turn many species rely on them.

From the canopy high above we fall into the leaf litter. Lemuria has a huge diversity of countless small critters from all sorts of clades. Here, at the edge of tropical rainforest we take a glimpse at some of them.

As you can see large gondwanathers, multis, noasaurids and simosuchids are among the large herbivores but that pales to the other, over 60 species we canonized in here.

Better late than never! The tropical rainforest is our most diverse as well as one of the most challenging environments of Lemuria. A complex tangle of flora and fauna that got more than 500 submissions! i am still not 100% happy with this but at some point you have to let go...

Btw. here the initial sketch where is piece stems from. The mood for this piece I had in mind early on but finding the right angle of the camera and the right amount and distribution of branches took a bit.

Large predatory stem-parrots are the thing you have to fear most up here, with a Greater messelmury surveying it's kingdom from it's nest in this case. We have tons of epiphytes up here too, with gingers, bananas and ferns growing all over the branches besides mosses and fungi...

While I am still labeling and tweaking the tropical rainforest piece let me introduce you to the canopy of Lemuria. Climbing crocs, multis and basal primates are accompanied by monotremes, marsupials and tons of birds and herbs...

Day146 of photoshopping @lastweektonight.com's John Oliver with fossils in the hopes that he saves the Paleontological Research Institution

Perhaps we need a dour mascot like Bernd (Homo brotus depressivus) to follow John (H. sapiens) into the void like Tim (Torcula apicalis) #fossilfriday #savePRI
John Oliver in a blue void. Bernd, a German puppet bread with hands but no arms and a dour facial expression stands to his right. in between them is a high spired fossil snail with googly eyes and a drawn on frown near the middle of the spire.

Day145 of photoshopping @lastweektonight.com's John Oliver (H. sapiens) with fossils in the hopes that he helps save the Paleontological Research Institution

Time is running short, but you could still put out a fire & make friends with this Wanneria walcottana (PRI76846)
#SavePRI #EarthScience ⚒️
John oliver at a desk. A globe smoldering where it was on fire but a fire extinguisher lies used on the desk as well. Between them a brown trilobite fossil. Behind the desk John sits with his head in his hands, pushing up his glasses as he covers his face

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

10 YEAR OLD ME IS LOSING HER MIND (a thread 🧵)
