And we also had the contribution of Fabio Manucci for the paleoartistic reconstructions!

The tail, similar to the Middle Jurassic Kulindadromeus, is covered in overlapping large scales, diminishing in size moving towards the end of the tail.
February 6, 2026 at 4:08 PM
As the name suggest, this new dinosaur species exhibits new integumentary structures never seen before in these dinosaurs, a wide array of small, medium and -relatively- large spikes on the body except of the tail.

Maybe a bit late for web timing, but ehy, NEW PAPER ON #fossilfriday!!!

I am proud to present you Haolong dongi gen. nov. sp. nov., a new hadrosauroid from the Early Cretaceous of China!
The specimen, almost complete, is a juvenile iguanodontian from the Yixian Formation of the Barremian (125 Mya).

Our latest research on hadrosaurid tail injuries as possible sex indication was announced by @colbertlateshow.bsky.social , how COOL is that?????

Tomorrow I’ll be travelling to Birmingham for the meeting of SVP:
- present two posters
- meet so many friends and colleagues I haven’t seen for a long time
- planning scicomm projects with a few cool buddies
-networking a lot
I look forward to see all of you there! 🦕🦖

I want to thank all my amazing coauthors -especially my mentor Darren Tanke (who first hypothesized the mating hypothesis in 1989 -DARREN, WE DID IT!-), the many institutions that helped me, and the paleoartist Emiliano Troco for the illustrations!
November 4, 2025 at 7:31 PM
there are MANY "but", "if", and biological implications.
The paper is published in OPEN ACCESS so you can read and give me your thoughts 😀
November 4, 2025 at 7:29 PM
After this evaluation, we realize that the mating hypothesis was the one explaining the pathological pattern at best.
The mounting male presses on the female tail, causing the vertebral lesions on top of the spine.
November 4, 2025 at 7:28 PM
Knowing where we were going, we had to be sure. Or, at least, we had to consider EVERY OTHER SCENARIOS to explain what really looked like something related to sexual activity: predation, locomotion stress, strange and particular behavior, herd stepping... all of them were missing soemthing.
November 4, 2025 at 7:27 PM
This is the condition for the tails we could check, we also have many other vertebrae in the dataset
November 4, 2025 at 7:26 PM
After many years of work, submission, tears and swat, we can finally reveal it - hadrosaurids were likely injuring the female partner during sex.
For many years, many hadrosaur caudal vertebrae are found possessing broken neural spines, healing, and this has puzzled many researchers...

Our controversial paper is finally out in @cp-iscience.bsky.social !
As part of my PhD dissertation at @qubelfastofficial.bsky.social in 2021, the last chapter was dedicated to a specific pathological pattern in hadrosaurid tails!

For ABSOLUTELY NO REASONS AT ALL, here the two replica skeletons of the Russian lambeosaurines Olorotitan and Amurosaurus at the Institute of Narural Sciences of Brussels for #fossilfriday

… hehehehe 😏👀🦕

Just dropping here the wooden cast of the Olorotitan holotype for absolutely no effing reasons 😇

4th November 17.30 Rome time.
Less than a week.

Similar cousins, and yet so different animals!
See the skull of my new species Cariocecus bocagei -published this week- at the foot of the Iguanodon statue at @naturalsciences-be.bsky.social for #fossilfriday

However, the color pattern of Kratos was not ideal to what I had in mind. I prepared some palettes based on birds, but then I had an idea. I am a huge @criticalrole.bsky.social fan, and I wanted to tribute them. This, I applied Grog’s tones to the official reconstruction by Victor Carvalho!
September 18, 2025 at 12:47 PM
Cariocecus was the Lusitania God of War in the pre-Roman age. It was therefore instantaneous the association with the famous videogame franchise of Kratos 😁 hence, during the first days after deciding this new genus name, I had fun making this fake PS5 cover!

ah, I was forgetting: Cariocecus is named after the Lusitanian GOD OF WAR Cariocecus (before been renamed into Mars/Ares). And bocagei refers to 19th century Portuguese zoologist José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage.
Actually, I'll show u something funny in the next days on the genus name XD 13/x

Furthermore, the supraorbital membrane articulates solely with the lacrimal, and not with the prefrontal as in other ornithischians. This placed the bone ina lower level in the orbit, likely giving it a "mean" look 10/x
