BAT Brazil sponsored a study claiming legalization would create thousands of new agricultural jobs.
Internal documents from Juul tell a different story: based on the tobacco needed to produce Juul’s liquid nicotine, fewer than 100 farmers could meet BAT’s projected demand. +

🚨 In Brazil, the tobacco and vape industries are linking vape legalization to job creation in rural areas — but the numbers don’t add up.

A new investigation by O Joio e O Trigo, a Brazilian news platform covering major industries, explains why.

It's time to leverage Article 18 of the #fctc and the parallel #plasticstreaty discussions in banning filtera and/or, demand industry foots the bill.

It also examines options for countries:

🚫 Ban filters & single-use plastics
💰 Make tobacco companies pay for waste
⚠️ Classify tobacco waste as hazardous

These measures support Article 18 of the WHO FCTC, protecting both people and the environment.

🧹 Clean-ups can raise awareness… but they don’t solve the root problem. +

📢 #COP11 is coming!
In November, Parties to the WHO FCTC will meet in Geneva to review progress and strengthen global tobacco control policies.

Tobacco waste is on the agenda, following up from COP10.
A new report highlights the environmental and health risks of discarded tobacco products. 🧵

Experts stress that the treaty should also address #CigaretteButts, echoing @unep.org , @who.int , and the WHO FCTC COP10 decision on Article 18, which calls filters “unnecessary, avoidable, and problematic.”

Talks ended today, with plans to resume at a later date yet to be confirmed.

curbing plastic production growth and imposing global, legally binding controls on toxic chemicals.

Last year’s fifth negotiation round in South Korea aimed for a final treaty text, but disagreements blocked any deal. The second part, scheduled for August, had the same result. +

After 11 days of talks in Geneva, countries were once again unable to reach an agreement on a Global #PlasticsTreaty.

Delegates remain deadlocked over issues that have stalled progress for years:

Yet filters create not only plastic waste but also toxic waste from chemicals.
They offer zero health benefits & make smoking easier, with harmful consequences.

❌ No mention of the #WHOFCTC.
A missed chance to connect health & environmental goals, despite the treaty’s requirement to align with it.

🚬 Cigarette filters?
Only plastic ones are listed for elimination, leaving room for “eco-friendly” versions.

In Brazil, the tobacco industry is mobilizing to try to interfere with #COP11. A bill in Rio Grande do Sul – the country’s top tobacco-producing state – seeks to label tobacco as of “economic, social, and cultural interest.” The goal is to pass it before COP11 to support the sector’s positioning. +
