putting it another way: Mastodon just went from clunky to usable in a big way, that probably contributed to people's impressions the last few times there was an interest in it. it could actually be good this time

Anyone considering giving #Mastodon another go, I'm happy to report that they appear to have (finally) fixed the issue where the server wouldn't search the fediverse for other replies, so you'd get:
- 0-1 replies on everyone else's posts
- 500 people replying the same thing on your post

A particularly insidious but common pitfall of community moderation is an understandable but wrong insistence on running things via strict adherence to a set of guidelines. This never actually works in practice because you end up with a bunch of bad faith actors constantly testing boundaries.
