every day i wake up in britain
"Secrets" is easily the weakest episode so far and probably could have been merged with episodes 4 & 5 into a couple of tighter episodes. The confrontation between Shane and Dale is pretty good but the pregnancy storyline is handled atrociously. The rest of the episode just feels like wheelspinning.

The scene in "Chupacabra" where Andrea accidentally shoots Daryl in the head by accident is so funny, it almost makes up for how badly they butchered her character from the comics.

cherokee rose is very much a "filler" episode with a very silly subplot involving pulling a walker from a well, but also has some very nice early scenes involving daryl and carol's friendship. i doubt anyone at the time thought that these two would get their own sequel series a decade later.

shane is so unhinged. complete liability. it's crazy that there are people who think he would have been a good leader for the group.

the problem with the anti-AI argument is that it's ultimately a very vibes-based movement where the loudest voices are often also the least informed on what they're talking about. using machine learning to clean up animations is nowhere near on the same level as image generation.

not much happens in the next episode except superman's dad shoots carl and we meet hershel (the best character from the early seasons). the writers still remember T-Dog exists but don't really know what to do with him at this point.

the season 2 opener has a pretty tense segment involving a walker herd passing right over the survivors, ending with sophia's disappearance. after that it kinda drops off. there's some nice stuff but the search for sophia drags quite a bit across this season's first half.

season 1 finished! definitely not my favourite season of the show, or even in my top 3, but still one of the strongest first seasons for any tv show.

only 171 more episodes to go!

8.5/10

i like that they give a concrete answer to the "is there a cure" question super early on. it's just a shame people remained annoying about it for the remainder of the show's run; a cure storyline would have been the most boring possible endgame. dr jenner is a fantastic one-off character though.

"wildfire" is the weakest episode of the season but still a good first glimpse into the nature of the virus itself - we see two different examples of people turning, with the characters deciding to venture out to the CDC for answers. quite an important episode despite being a bit forgettable.

"vatos" is a great episode but I always felt that the whole "hostile group turns out to actually be good people" card was played a bit too early. they should have kept the isolation of the main group up for the whole season, and saved this plot point for later in the show.

people put season 1/frank darabont on a pedestal over the later seasons but i honestly feel like it falls off a bit after Rick reunites with his family in episode 3. it's still great TV but it's not a season i'm too invested in when i rewatch the series.
