I spent my Monday consorting with an English major. Through which I learned that I have been marketing my book a bit weird, which I knew of course. I hadn't been able to really pinpoint a genre. Fantasy feels too broad for a book set in a fantasy world, but doesn't conform to the typical hero's...
I'm a little late. But I can finally share some snips of the most recent draft for "The Bird with Antlers"!

Progress is slow going, but I hope to have this draft finished at the end of the year. Its the last big rewrite I have planned.

"Oh-Mama-they don't do it like that anymore. He talked Brotherhood. He said everybody ought to learn how to sit down and hate each other with good Christian fellowship.
(She and Walter shake hands to ridicule the remark.)"

How come everyone treats writing as some ancient art that requires an impossible amount of skill? Every time I say I write as a hobby, they look at me like I'm crazy. Just plug away a bit at a time and you'll be fine. Why does everyone think they don't have time?

OK, I promise I'm still alive. Life got a little busy is all and its been hard trying to find both the time and will to write something meaningful down. But I HAVE been doing things. Including a restructure along with some tweaks in character design that I feel fit the story better.

I’m alive.

Working, working, working…

Perhaps something soon, or maybe not. I’ll be back…

I'm still here!

Been busy as a bee and dealing with some sort of depression that I typically get at this time of year.

I'll update y'all soon

This has been an…interesting month. “The Bird with Antlers” feels further away than it did just a few weeks ago. Maybe that’s not necessarily a bad thing though.

I have no aspirations of being a “writer”. Meaning, I don’t want to become the next King. But it is that…

The WIP is currently heading toward a fifth round of edits, although I am seriously considering a "reimagining". I wrote mine off the back of a premise already explored in Frieren, just with my own twist on it. Leaning into horror more. The issue with having such a...

I'm reading like five different beta reads at the moment. So I only really have time to slowly and methodically make my way through "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Issylfr is stoic, methodical. Perhaps some things catch her by surprise but she rarely shows it.

She sorta acts like a terminator lol

Sorta?

The issue with having a whole species as the villains means questions like this don't really apply.

Dyr view power as absolute. All there is was the power that you hold over others. Their society is power hungry, eager to show it off whenever possible.

#FantasyIndiesMaytober
The dyr staged a pretty successful campaign against all other races. Driving them from most of the continent to a small peninsula to the north.

They would have complete victory, if not for Issylfr and her party.

Issylfr would be the type to not see the point in therapy. Only to then see the extent of her underlying grief and guilt of the past.

Reins death would be the issue. But she would definitely need some convincing to go.
"Fight."

In this scene, a new character had just met our MC, Issylfr, hoping that the elf will be able to help with her ongoing research.

I’ve been on a horror movie binge lately so here are my favorites.

Skinamarink is an all-time for me. Currently the main inspiration behind a little WIP that’s just now getting traction.

Nope is amazing as well. A great take on aliens with a lot of social commentary.

I’ve always been terribly interested in the idea of immortality. That specific thought that it’s not that amazing if no one else is immortal.

That and being told I’m “hard to read” or “unemotional”. Perhaps a bit of neurodivergent tendencies.

All the dyr aspire to be strong and to become stronger.

But things aren’t that simple with humans. Some wish to hold onto power while others simply wish to protect what is theirs.

ALMOST FORGOT AGAIN LMAO

It’s not so much a who but a what. All dyr rely on not only their magic, but their very animalistic nature.

Both things that can be exploited for great gain. As our MC does.

Umm...so like...

I might have totally forgotten about this. (oops.)

So, rapid fire starting with today, (More in comments):

There are plenty of scary moments. Like a hallucination of a side character. Relieving her moments hiding from a raiding party with her friend.

I am just now finishing up my first read through of House of Leaves. It took me forever, but I loved every second of it. My favorite projects are the ones that I can return to and find something new.

This book is so packed with information and the horror is perfect for me.

There is already a TV show quite similar in concept. And a movie, video game, musical don't really fit the world at all.

This is one of those weird times where I am perfectly happy with it being just a book. No need for anything afterword.

There is a large scheme, uncovered in the earlier parts of the book. Monsters have been stalking a small village. Kidnapping and teleporting people away to an unknown fate.

Perhaps their corpses could prove useful building blocks for something far superior.
