Writer. Currently writing debut novel (“The Bird with Antlers”)[Slipstream Fiction] and as such, suffering. Always on the prowl for beta readers. DM if interested. My Twitter/X is more personal (Same name).
I'm a little late. But I can finally share some snips of the most recent draft for "The Bird with Antlers"!

Progress is slow going, but I hope to have this draft finished at the end of the year. Its the last big rewrite I have planned.

"Oh-Mama-they don't do it like that anymore. He talked Brotherhood. He said everybody ought to learn how to sit down and hate each other with good Christian fellowship.
(She and Walter shake hands to ridicule the remark.)"

OK, I promise I'm still alive. Life got a little busy is all and its been hard trying to find both the time and will to write something meaningful down. But I HAVE been doing things. Including a restructure along with some tweaks in character design that I feel fit the story better.

This has been an…interesting month. “The Bird with Antlers” feels further away than it did just a few weeks ago. Maybe that’s not necessarily a bad thing though.

I have no aspirations of being a “writer”. Meaning, I don’t want to become the next King. But it is that…

I'm reading like five different beta reads at the moment. So I only really have time to slowly and methodically make my way through "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Issylfr is stoic, methodical. Perhaps some things catch her by surprise but she rarely shows it.

She sorta acts like a terminator lol

The dyr staged a pretty successful campaign against all other races. Driving them from most of the continent to a small peninsula to the north.

They would have complete victory, if not for Issylfr and her party.

"Fight."

In this scene, a new character had just met our MC, Issylfr, hoping that the elf will be able to help with her ongoing research.

I’ve been on a horror movie binge lately so here are my favorites.

Skinamarink is an all-time for me. Currently the main inspiration behind a little WIP that’s just now getting traction.

Nope is amazing as well. A great take on aliens with a lot of social commentary.

I’ve always been terribly interested in the idea of immortality. That specific thought that it’s not that amazing if no one else is immortal.

That and being told I’m “hard to read” or “unemotional”. Perhaps a bit of neurodivergent tendencies.

ALMOST FORGOT AGAIN LMAO

It’s not so much a who but a what. All dyr rely on not only their magic, but their very animalistic nature.

Both things that can be exploited for great gain. As our MC does.

"Saturday" Snippet (Except its on a Monday):

A failed assassination attempt leads to boiling emotions of anger and betrayal. Followed closely by threats from an unlikely source.

Umm...so like...

I might have totally forgotten about this. (oops.)

So, rapid fire starting with today, (More in comments):

There are plenty of scary moments. Like a hallucination of a side character. Relieving her moments hiding from a raiding party with her friend.

I am just now finishing up my first read through of House of Leaves. It took me forever, but I loved every second of it. My favorite projects are the ones that I can return to and find something new.

This book is so packed with information and the horror is perfect for me.

There is a large scheme, uncovered in the earlier parts of the book. Monsters have been stalking a small village. Kidnapping and teleporting people away to an unknown fate.

Perhaps their corpses could prove useful building blocks for something far superior.

Villain’s quirks…

Mm. One of my villains is based off the Mari Lwyd. His body is a crude imitation, so his limbs often snap to position since they aren’t made well.

Another acts a jester, while one more is far too arrogant and young.

Also. MHA?

Mmm.

Woke up early, worked, then promptly too a big ol’ nap.

Anyway, here’s “Wonderwall”

This scene takes place almost near the end of the book during the aftermath of a grueling fight.

I just got caught up on Season 2 of Severance.

Which puts me in a weird floating stage. But I sort of want to go back and binge both seasons of Utopia for the uptenth millionth time.

God, both these shows are brilliant. Especially when it comes to the soundtracks.

Again, "The Bird with Antlers" has many villains. However, three of them are "dyr" and share the same traits.

Strengths: Physically and magically powerful. Able to think and plan. Cunning.

Weaknesses: A slave to their very nature. Allowing exploitation.

Issylfr has many fears that she doesn't quite view as fears yet.

She fears being alone. She fears the regret that comes when someone passes on before she can. She fears how long her life might truly be.

But she'll never actively think it.

Nightmares...

Interestingly enough, I don't have any traditional nightmares. But there are parts where people hallucinate while they are awake. One such character had to relive the destruction of their village and family, while being unable to change it.

It didn’t feel right to take these sentences out of context, so here is about half a page. Yes I know, a rather large “snippet”.

How do people experience fear differently? And how does that drive them to be brave in the face of fear?

To be a hero…

I'll take the Free Friday to explain:

"The Bird with Antlers" is a slow paced novel around an elven MC learning to express emotions after the passing of her comrade. Aimed at the neurodivergent community who may be able to relate to being misunderstood.
