Reintroducing myself. I'm a biologist @uw. I work at the Friday Harbor Labs imaging and doing biomechanics of fishes and other organisms. We have a CT scanner, SEM, and 3d printers that are free for anyone to use. I love open source tools and data.

I also love to fly airplanes and build chairs.

We demonstrate that all critical life stages (resting, feeding, being cleaned, mating & giving birth) can occur in the small Fakarava channel & we define it as a “super habitat”

I like cat software/dog hardware to describe foxes. This is Urocyon, the gray fox. The skull has a u shaped cranial crest, while Vulpes, the red fox, has a v shaped crest.

I do not know how that was arranged.

I’m thinking a fox. Not sure which one. The long snout makes me think Red, but it could definitely be a Gray. The crests make me think predator.

In today's #DeskDetritus yet another North American mammal skull. Sly devils will get it.

A beaver! Common find north of Algonquin Park. I once found more than 40 while on a back country canoe trip. Must have been a trappers processing site.

Weekends I sometimes give tours of my lab and FHL. This morning I’m hanging with a nonagenarian who wanted to be a marine biologist. Sitting next to the tide pool for an hour made for easy touring.

Heading home. The commute is smoky, but the ceiling is high.

Cala was fun. It is a good group of students.

No, but I reposted. Who knows what expertise lurks.

Help me, science Bluesky! Anyone know any fish biologists working on hybridized trout and other exotic and rare trout / salmonid subspecies? #biology #marinebiology #fishbiology

Good morning. In #deskDetritus today we have another North American mammal skull. Water rotted in northern Ontario🇨🇦. I lost the mandible in the process.

Yep, that skull was Procyon lotor, the raccoon. As @julierwright.bsky.social pointed out it has lots of brain space.

Here are two, both found DOR and prepped with bugs and peroxide. One is huge.

Shout out to @coastalpaleo.bsky.social for first ID.

Excited to share the first paper from my PhD!

We looked at what traits help Aneides salamanders excel at climbing using museum specimens, CT scans, SEM, and more! No claws or toe pads, so how do they do it? In short, with long limbs, big feet and grippy toes! 🦎🧪

I asked the family mammalogist and she said: "Not the best angle for ID, but I think raccoon. Big brain!"

Hmmm...I wonder which North American mammal this belonged too. Now it lives in the table of skulls and oddities.

I am not having fun with social media. That is why I am not posting. I'm still working. Still making images. But the fun/work ratio is not great.

Personal nose strut beyond specs. Needs total replacement. Airplane nose strut is on 3rd rebuild in 6 months, so it may be in a similar position. Found an o-ring in a usually safe spot that was clearly damaged. So, with that repair I believe I am safe to hit small bumps on the taxiway.
