Day 5 of #ClassicsTober25: Hermes Psychopompos. This stunning pottery painting is from an Anatolian grave. It is a white-ground cup from the eastern cemetery of Daskyleion in a Persian satrapal center. It dates to the late fifth century BC. #ClassicsTober

I know that he is often regarded with fear and malice but I wanted to depict a young Thanatos as mild mannered with kind and patient eyes. I wanted him wearing his “melampeplos” with a soul butterfly on his finger.

Two Roman finds from Rottweil (my beautiful hometown 😊): vessels in the shape of boars, dating 2nd century AD. They were used to hold oil.

Odysseus & the Dead 💀🔮👻

Art by flaroh illustration. a scene from Book XI of the Odyssey, where Odysseus summons the spirits of the dead in order to speak to the prophet Tiresias, and in doing so, meets the souls of friends and family who have died since the siege of Troy began. In my illustration he stands ready with his sword as Achilles approaches him, with the arrow still in his ankle. Behind, the other spirits of the dead kneel by the pooling black blood of the rams Odysseus sacrificed.
