I'm not going to link it - you can read the news yourself.
But we *need* people with sociology, anthropology and media degrees - they're the ones to help us think critically about society, the media and ourselves (though I can see why some would not want that to happen).

I'm intrigued, though - education, teaching, is hardly highly paid. Is it one of the degrees for the chop? In a situation where we already have a recruitment and retention crisis?
And what about nurses, early childcare workers...? People one really wants to be careful, critical thinkers?

I want to tell all students of the so-called 'rip-off degrees' named below that your critical thinking is important and makes valid contributions to culture and society

Without your skills, we wouldn't be able to unpack toxic discourses and do something about them

This makes me so angry. These people view all life as training for lifelong servitude/work. There's no room for interest, enjoyment, and culture in their bleak vision of education. At least she'll never be in power to see it through. Though Reform are probably worse.

I cannot see how English, part of the British EBACC, is a rip-off degree. Undermines all English teachers. And performing arts is one of British strong points. Undermining British culture. Then attack at studying our society. Undermining researched solutions to today's problems.

She's nothing if not predictable, is she? I know the Tories aren't keen on anything Green these days, but pretty much all they've done this week is recycle stuff they've been banging on about--for the most part fruitlessly--for the last decade and a half. And today it's "Mickey Mouse" degrees. 🙄

Kommentti: Johan pomppasi – nyt muka etätyöläisetkin heikentävät talouskasvua
Etätyöläisten moittiminen talouskasvun haittaamisesta on yhtä outoa kuin säästäjien syyttely, kirjoittaa erikoistoimittaja Jan Hurri.

Excellent letter from the Bishop of Birmingham to Robert Jenrick.

At a time when so many other voices have been silent, the bishops have been admirably outspoken against attempts to stir up division.

The churches do a lot of community cohesion work & do not want to see this trashed for party gain.

Interdisciplinarity is fun because it’s something job ads in humanities HE say they want but it often feels like it actively disqualifies you (in the sense of having degrees in, and published in leading journals of, multiple distinct disciplines). Everyone believes you’re not in their discipline.

Hakoinen Castle dates to the medieval period in the 13th/14th century. It is on a very steep-sided rock by Lake Kernaala in the manner of the hill fort tradition. The top of the rock is 63 metres above the lake water level. Photo: Teemu Mönkkönen (CC BY 4.0). #HillfortsWednesday

It’s great that the Greens acknowledge the interconnection of heritage & nature, but l hope it amounts to more than just giving nature the same protection as heritage - we need better integration in planning policy, and recognition that ‘landscape’ is the bridge between them, not a subset of nature

🧵 Sinister stuff. Jenrick, a Tory leadership candidate, says he didn’t see a White face in an area, & that it looked like a slum. This is a v old racist dog-whistle. Then when challenged on it, he accuses journos of fomenting terrorism. He’s clearly in fascist double-speak mode [1]

Wow. Robert Jenrick doubles down by branding a black journalist's questions "ridiculous" and saying that the problem is not his comments, but "journalists like you who pop up and try to knock me down", adding that "this is the reason why terrorist attacks happen". ~AA
