z's art is technically seemless, and it makes the writing a lot less forgiveable. at least there was some actual conviction (in the often quite silly) writing of msg—but what's compelling in msg is completely hollowed out in z, which repeats all the same narrative beats and only by rote.

thinking about msg, the writing hardly better, but it's a lot more charming for what it is. it was clearly produced on a shoestring, and while a lot of the animation is awkward there are moments you can see the animators negotiating constraints of time and money to make something visually striking.

the animation is gorgeous. the colors, the technical drawing and designs—impeccable.

totally wasted on the writing, which is atrocious. primary characters are dying left and right now, and i could care less—uniformly insufferable characters.

what actually sucks the most is it coincides with my last opportunity to sketch at a special exhibition at the met. could barely begin a single drawing.

re-reading the copy i picked up at CAKE because i don't want to wait for the next pages—and goddam, some wealthy patron of the arts needs to fund a riso edition.

upon seeing the news this morning one of my very first thoughts was "they're gonna give trump a nobel peace prize."

i attended and helped out behind my partner's table both days, i was there to witness the numerous problems.

i have the impression a lot of people traveled with the expectation that it was going to be Comic Arts Brooklyn, which it isn't at all.

the organizers burned a LOT of bridges.

i definitely trust BICS to manage a con the size of NYCC. they've got an architect now to draw maps! and satellite rooms, which may or may not have artificial lights!

i keep meeting cartoonists who traveled to BICS from places like baltimore or toronto to table and. ugh... we need new cons.

anyway, if you're applying to MoCCA as an artist and don't understand why you can't get a table year after year, uh, turns out you're competing for about 90 slots out of the 130 or so left after sponsors get tables.

and if you want a four-foot table you're actually fighting for *maybe* 30 slots.
