@stevevladeck.bsky.social has a great explainer here 👇

The TL;DR version: there’s no reason to believe they’re on any kind of expedited schedule for the tariffs case, and it’s as likely as not that it won’t come until June.

This is correct. The last thing — the absolute *last* thing — a Republican politician wants is to have to apply for a job on the open market.

These are people who’ve spent their entire lives closeted away in the ivory towers of the conservative academic/media world, completely consumed by RW ideology.

They can’t imagine anyone opposing them or having a different view because, in their world, no one does!

Here’s what Mike hasn’t figured out: if you’re explaining, you’re losing.

Obviously you know this, but this is exactly what the Civil Rights Movement did — the whole idea was to draw out the likes of Bull Connor into the open, so the world could see what they were *really* like.

And clearly, this strategy still works.

What was the incident at the Ford plant?

This one, along those same lines, is also very good:

So now they’re there because they’re there. Good lord…

Do the tariffs only get charged once (in 2025) or do importers have to pay them every year/every time they purchase goods from overseas?

That’s a really interesting point — video is really the only mass medium

I saw that and immediately thought of you 😉

There was a whole Seinfeld episode about this too 🤣

What would be the legal basis for that? Trump vs. U.S.?
January 12, 2026 at 8:04 PM
They see no need at all to do the ordinary work every other WH does of trying to persuade Americans of the wisdom of what they're doing. Why lift a finger to sell the public on what you're doing when you're *obviously* 100% correct, amirite?
January 12, 2026 at 7:18 PM
This will sound crazy, but I actually think she's being straight-up here. The people who staff this WH seem to be 100% true believers; I doubt they'd be in those jobs if they weren't.

And b/c they're all 100% bought in, she can't see how unpopular all this is, how insane it looks to the rest of us.

So is this a case of some people in DOJ doing a little "working towards the Fuhrer"?
January 12, 2026 at 6:44 PM
That's certainly worth taking a hard look at, especially in light of the Supreme Court's decision a few years ago to grant presidents immunity for any "official act" they take in office. In tandem, they've been more corrosive to our democracy than the court probably imagined they would.
January 12, 2026 at 5:08 PM
Yes, but I'm thinking more structural, long term reforms. The U.S. Constitution has some pretty clear weaknesses when it comes to a president who's determined to break all the rules.
January 12, 2026 at 3:45 PM
I should add, I think there are still lots of great reporters and writers out there.

But it sure seems like the incentives right now in media right now are to put on a kind of reality show about the presidency, not unlike what Mark Burnett did with "The Apprentice."
January 12, 2026 at 2:01 PM
A) The overwhelming majority of DC/NY-based media are still on X, and we know what that does to people.

B) Imo, they're invested in his "success" (whatever that means) b/c the media business model today depends on the kind of engagement only Trump can spark.

And, Biden bored them. So here we are.
January 12, 2026 at 1:57 PM
This is all interesting, but I'm also ready for some ideas on how we get out of this. (That starts with Dems winning the midterms, I know, but what about after that?)
