Excited to share the lab's 1rst preprint! Rapid high-res immunofluorescence is now possible in cultured & environmental diatoms thanks to 4-fold expansion microscopy. A step-change for comparative cell biology in one of the most important phytoplankton groups on the planet 🥳

They are architects of the sea, engineers of the air—capturing carbon, atom by atom.

While you breathe, they build. While you sleep, they safeguard our climate.

Very nice paper Thibaut; the duck intro just killed me and I’m looking forward to the next paper just for the thread you’ll pull out. That was a good laugh with my morning coffee

Last week, we started to collect samples from high-altitude Alpine lakes for the ERC-funded #CAPSOLUTION project! Throughout July and August, we will study the diversity of #viruses, #bacteria, and #protists in these extreme environments.

Our home base for the first week was Lake Gossenköllesee at 2416 m elevation. The research station (Univ. of Innsbruck) sheltered us during an unexpected snowstorm in July. See pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33436089 for viruses from this lake!

The Marine Research Centre (CIM) at the University of Vigo, Spain, and EMBL join forces to study how to curb red tides and anticipate the effects of marine heatwaves.

The CELLBLOOM project will advance scientific understanding of current global changes in the ocean.
