This is a random thought and not super educated, but I wonder if salt has been tried before given that only a very select few plants can grow there and the majority can't survive. Or some mixture of salt and something else perhaps?

Most plants and weeds hate sand - it tends to be very nutrient poor. It doesn't completely remove the problem but significantly slows it. Having said that, it needs some coating or some way of staying in place.

If I had to choose one, preferably fiction, which should it be?

Have you tried natural methods? Perhaps filling weed prone gaps with sand? This won't solve the weed problem 100% but you would need manual labour much less frequently.
