Watching Star Trek TOS for the first time. TV used to be perfect, how did we fuck it up so badly?

Every screenshot from that Stranger Things finale looks like the movies 14 yr old me made with my friends after buying a $20 greenscreen off Amazon

Love to pretend that David Byrne is saying "Liam Neeson" during that part in Psycho Killer

Anyway 2025 is about to end so my fav thing to come out this year was Absolute Martian Manhunter. Camp and Rodríguez are generational talents who every issue are doing stuff I didn't think was possible in comics. So good it has me buying a monthly physical comic again!

As the year wraps up here's my current top 16 2025 films (note Marty Supreme and Hamnet not out until late Jan in Aus and Sentimental Value is not playing in ANY theatres near me, so this list will probs change)

My fav scene from Avatar is the amrita harvesting scene from Way of Water which is so comically evil that it ends up being one of the best depictions of colonial extractivist ideology on film youtu.be/R64uB8-aGIU?...

In the 70s the material conditions existed for a truck driver to convince a bunch of Canadian dentists to fund his short film as a tax write-off and become the biggest filmmaker in the world. Must have been nice!!!
James Cameron is going to become the first director to make four $1 billion films in a row

Never has a movie more precariously skirted the line between cunty diva slay and disgusting French pervert misogyny

All I see when I see Bari Weiss is Refaat Alareer’s murderer. In a better world she would be on trial instead of serving as a well-paid censor for a billionaire family.

Having seen Muppet Christmas Carol more than any other movie, the most pivotal piece of why it works is the massive tonal shift during the Ghost of Christmas Future sequence, where there's no jokes (or Gonzo!) and it's taken dead seriously. You wouldn't get that with any kids film today!
I do think the key for things like Home Alone, Muppet Christmas Carol, etc. is that the actors fully commit to the bit

I feel like similar films made now lean too heavily into doing it ironically

If there's any real takeaway from the Epstein photos it's that they obvs didn't kill Kubrick for Eyes Wide Shut because the real secret elite sex parties were so much tackier and less elaborate than we ever could have imagined. It's like that Always Sunny ep

Genuinely surprised at how much I didn't care for Avatar: Fire and Ash, a movie that is a near identical copy of The Way of Water but inferior in every way

John Howard pushed for the invasion of Iraq, which was one of the dominoes which created the conditions for ISIS and caused untold human misery we are still dealing with today. He refused to acknowledge racism was a main driver of the Cronulla riots.

In honour of Avatar: Fire and Ash releasing this week, I went up to the Aus Maritime Museum to see Big Jim Cameron's submarine (including the tiny pilot pod!!!)

There's a shot towards the end of Wake Up Dead Man involving Andrew Scott's Orson Scott Card-ripoff that's one of the funniest and most mean-spirited things in a movie this year. Terrific picture.

It's a real tragedy that the only Muppets content we get now is their random cameos at The Game Awards but it is the one thing that kinda endears me to Geoff Keighley

While we're all hating on Tarantino this week, worth bringing up his insane reaction to one of the most genuine and empathetic films ever made
