The cost of living keeps rising for working families while the wealthiest are doing better than ever. We can begin to address affordability in New Jersey by raising taxes on super millionaires and big corporations who just got a huge tax cut from Congress.

Can anyone make it cheaper to live in N.J.? Sherrill and Ciattarelli make their case.
The candidates for governor battle over property taxes, school funding and energy costs as polls show affordability is a top voter concern ahead of November election.

Theresa Luoni of Basking Ridge relies on Medicaid for her two autistic sons and saves money by only wearing contacts when she drives.

Government has shut down because Republicans want to gut health services for millions like Theresa so that billionaires, and corporations can enjoy tax breaks

The federal shutdown isn’t abstract — 22,000 NJ workers are caught in it. The fight’s over healthcare, but the real backdrop is years of tax breaks for the wealthy while public services are starved.

💰 The top 10% get perks worth 2.3% of their income.
💔 The poorest 10% would lose benefits worth 3.9% of their income.

⌛ Funny how the benefits for the wealthiest last forever, but fringe ones for everyone else come with an expiration date.

Taxing the rich is good policy in more fairly asking those who have accumulated the most wealth from our society to pay more.

BUT an underappreciated additional benefit of taxing the rich is reducing the risk of an unaccountable wealthy class that evades basic societal rules.

🎉 VICTORY!

In a unanimous vote, Passaic stabilizes rents at 3% and becomes the 5th city in NJ to eliminate vacancy decontrol! This new housing ordinance will impact more than 10,000 tenants, nearly half of the city’s renter population.

Are rising food costs hitting your household budget? We're hearing that people across NJ are struggling to make ends meet, and new federal cuts will make life harder. Food banks and farmers may be doing all they can, but they can’t replace a strong safety net.

The truth is simple: affordable housing benefits everyone.

Yet too often, policymakers sabotage NJ's economic resilience by under-funding affordable housing & blocking developments — deciding who belongs, and who doesn’t.

Affordable housing isn’t a radical political idea in New Jersey. But telling the truth about it? That just might be.

Theresa is a single mom of two kids with severe autism. Medicaid is how they survive.
Her own Representative, Thomas Kean Jr., voted to cut it by $1 TRILLION.

This is not fiscal responsibility. It’s cruelty, plain and simple.

State Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman says there’s “no scenario” in which New Jersey can make up the difference. Many residents expect to lose coverage.

There is a time delay before the worst impacts hit New Jerseyans, but we're not going to forget what happened. Framed as a crackdown on “waste, fraud, and abuse,” the new law instead cuts key benefits, increases red tape, and raises costs for many families.

Cutting SNAP is like stealing candy from a baby (metaphorically!). But in all seriousness, for the FIRST TIME in the program's history, these cuts will shift cost to the states, and some kids are going to lose access to a critical life improving benefit.

We knew the budget outlook was bad — but it’s worse than we thought.

This new report from @njpolicy.bsky.social shows how NJ’s FY26 budget deepens inequality, shortchanges public needs, and sets us up for a fiscal cliff.

This isn’t governing. It’s deferring disaster.
njpolicy.bsky.social
New Jersey's FY 2026 budget could have been a moment of courage.

Instead, the budget process went on autopilot, cutting back revenue increases and dipping deeper into state cash reserves, while failing to protect residents from federal cuts.

This is worth repeating. Again and again and again. The needs of the people of New Jersey are not being met. When facing an affordable housing crisis, taking money away from the affordable housing fund to plug a budget hole lawmakers KNEW was coming, is not a solution.

Unless you're in the top 1%, the “Big, Beautiful Bill” probably hurts more than it helps. It adds trillions to the debt by cutting essential programs. Just to hand more wealth to those who need it the least?!? That’s bad fiscal policy and immoral.

The bill, signed by President Trump on July 4, will offer tax breaks for some in New Jersey, but lower-income residents will lose crucial benefits.
