making meaning out of mayhem
Narratives are how we make meaning out of experience. Elon Musk wants to skip that step. Ad-tech makes it easy.

But the reason I'm telling YOU tonight is that, if you consider HCR's Feb. 19th narrative a reasonable meaning-making & you agree w/ Doctorow's account of #AdTech - you know that these are people whose gullibility Vladimir Putin is counting on to give him Ukraine. 20/link to essay version follows

That theme is advertised, and is selling exceptionally well, to another group of people.

Specific people.

People who are already known because they were previously targeted and took the bait (this is what I was screaming about in 2020). 17/

Musk and Trump World are not doing that. They are not offering causal relationships. They are not recounting experiences and setting them in context. They are making a set of assertions, linked not by causality but by theme.

The theme is hating people. 15/

[Medium version had links; will post at end.]
The assertions coming from Elon Musk right now, about saving astronomical $$ and about finding “appalling” levels of fraud and waste, aren’t even really narratives at all.
Narratives assemble available information into casual relationships. 14/

The stories Trump voters are telling themselves about immigrants eating dogs are largely not based on events (remember we experience events & tell stories to understand them).
Those things didn’t happen, and some of the people who initially peddled the lies have even said so. 13/
