I think Threatening - Encouraging would work which would be a scale of how the game pushes the player to progress. Threat would be games with more failure or death states while Encourage is letting the player continue without a threat to push them. So story reasons and scares take more precedence.

I miss the episodic style lots of older FPS games did. Instead of one single Campaign just a series of Episodes with mild story to them each not necessarily directly interconnected and developers can really play with design and layout and events.
