I teach at a small private liberal arts college. Beautiful leafy campus. Tight knit community. Outstanding education at $60K per year.

I have many students who live off-campus and only eat because they work at fast food joints. I keep soup, ramen packets, pb crackers, and snacks in my office 💔

Yup! I do not qualify for a food plan since I live off campus and I have no where to store cold items & finding microwaves on campus can be hard. It makes it really hard for students like to me eat during the 12 hours I am on campus

This is amazing! I'm always glad to see this sorts of resources, although I do worry that since they exist in some capacity ppl think the need has been addressed. But often things like this cannot meet the needs of Disabled students (like food allergies, diabetes, etc) which is why we need SNAP!

But that was also in 2001. Fast food had a dollar menu and people often paid in cash so it was possible to find a few dollars in change in couches & the cracks in drive thru's. Now no one has cash & even McD is unaffordable. Being poor is a lot harder now.

When I was 19 I was living in my car in the campus parking lot. I lived off the change I found in drive thru's and the common room coffee/broth machine. I had just lost my job so I did not qualify for food stamps. I remember crying in their office when I learned that. Being poor in college SUCKS

I am not saying that all spaces should be darker and quieter. I know most ppl cannot see at light levels that are comfortable for me. I am just asking that this reality be recognized. It is really hard to exist in the world where everything hurts.
