Hi all! I am a nontraditional undergrad student trying to raise funds to present my 1st poster at a national conference. This will help my grad school applications & (hopefully) help others learn grass morphology! Please donate & share if you are able
I was accepted to present a poster at the National Forage and Grassland Council conference this upcoming Jan in Asheville, NC. Unfortunately, my school does not have travel grants. Please help me with my first national poster presentation by sharing my GFM! #Academia #Purdue

I teach at a small private liberal arts college. Beautiful leafy campus. Tight knit community. Outstanding education at $60K per year.

I have many students who live off-campus and only eat because they work at fast food joints. I keep soup, ramen packets, pb crackers, and snacks in my office 💔

With the funding lapse looming, I just went ahead and sent out messages through our course management system that included a schedule for campus area food banks to all students in my courses this semester.
Professors,

some of your students just lost their access to food. This will put a strain on their ability to pay rent and focus in class. They might need to not pay electric to make ends meet. They might be coming to class hungry.

Please be aware that the loss of SNAP will impact your students

Even in normal times I have had the financial privilege to bring snacks to my 3hr lectures/labs and it makes a difference with student participation, engagement and lets them know in a small way I care about them. Worth it to me. Not something everyone can afford to do (As an adjunct I understand).

Submitted my first IRB and just refreshing it constantly so I can address any comments immediately. Does this ever get less stressful? 😬

I know it is annoying when people keep sharing GFM & I hate having to resort to this. Being able to do this poster presentation will help me demonstrate my ability to do research and get accepted to grad school. I am an older student who has fought for 25 yrs to reach this point. Pls help if you can

This is part of the guide that I would be presenting at the National Forage and Grassland Council conference. It is because of Bsky that I was able to create this guide and I am returning to this community to help me reach the goal of presenting the poster!
Thanks to the amazing assistance of @jrossibarra.bsky.social & Dr. Toby Kellogg I think I have it figured out! #botany #agronomy #forage #purdue

This commission statement refers to people with Autism, ADHD, asthma, auto-immune disease, and chronic illness as a “dire threat to the American people and our way of life”.

This is a manifesto against disability.

This is the language of eugenics.

Is there any way to get small amounts of Whirl-Pak bags? I do not need 500. In my whole life, I might not need 500. I need 50 max

Just saying that sensory bombardment is considered psychological torture. If the work place had super bright lights & really loud sounds, all of ya'll would be stimming & unable to get shit done too. Autistic ppl are often more sensitive to sensory input so "normal" lights/sounds can be painful
Especially in light of papers which talk about advocacy fatigue and the mental harms caused by stress and a high mental load

I just find it interesting that this trait was identified as a cause of unemployment instead of investigating if a hostile environment could cause a reduction in ability

Reading some papers & questioning assumptions I'm seeing made abt self-efficacy (one’s belief in their ability to
complete tasks or accomplish goals)

The lit says that low self-efficacy results in depression & anxiety but why not assume that depression/anxiety causes low self efficacy?

I really don't have anyone in my life that is in academia so I figure I would ask here

What should the timeline look like for applying to grad programs? My second semester of Jr yr starts Jan. Should I be doing anything this semester?

Holy hell she's awesome. First, her reply (<10 minutes after I messaged her at 10pm on a Monday): "Those particular terms are pretty confusing; they represent an attempt to reduce a continuous variable (length of internodes along the rachis of the inflorescnece) to a qualitative variable. ...

“This terminology is misleading in its simplicity, and in particular in the inclusion of so many disparate structures under the term "panicle". This problem has been observed by several workers .. who realized that more precise descriptions of morphology would be necessary.”

The project I am working on is making grass identification guides more accessible and in order to do that I need to sort out all the different terms used and their synonyms. Here is a table of just the ligule terms I have found. #Botany can we agree this is a tad complicated and hard to understand?
December 10, 2024 at 2:08 AM
wait wait wait.... according to this website a "Panicle" and "Compound raceme" are synonyms?? 🤯

Northern Ontario Plant Database. (2024). Inflorescence Types. Northern Ontario Plant Database. www.northernontarioflora.ca/inflorescenc...
December 10, 2024 at 1:42 AM
The more I try to understand this, the more I confuse myself. I am now unsure of facts I previously knew. I am holding my face asking myself "What even IS a panicle?? How is it different than a compound raceme?? What even is reality?"

Anyhow, finals week is going fine
So according to the literature Digitaria ischaemum (Smooth crabgrass) has panicle, raceme, spike, AND digitate inflorescence type, which does not seem possible. It just depends on how you define the terms? Why is there not a consensus on this? 😭
