I’m Ryan, an earth science educator & curriculum developer at two colleges in Central California. I’ve had a hand in some cool virtual field experience innovations, but lately I’m the “Volcano Tissue Box Guy”. I’m pinning my Etsy store link here for when I release batches.

Nova has a new special about Asteroids and it looks great. Plus, it features two of my colleagues, Amanda Alexander and Simone Marchi. They are discussing ideas about how asteroid impacts may have created habitable environments on early Earth. Check it out! #planetsci 🧪

The fact of the matter is: a severe #IceStorm is developing across much of the country at this very moment, with potentially devastating and far-reaching consequences extending far beyond the region of maximum #ice concentration. Watch out for the #ice, and help your neighbors weather the storm.
CNN: DHS officials have come to FEMA staff and told them to limit the use of the word ice…they are worried that by posting something like, watch out for the ice, that it's going to become a meme….

The 2026 National Defense Strategy has dropped. I worked on the last one. As far as I can tell, no mentions of climate, energy, minerals, base resilience, natural disasters, wildfires. The defense industrial base gets a nod but pretty hand-wavy. I'll have more to say early next week.

Fun fact: when bluesky was invite-only, we got our invite from AOC
AOC: An agency that is attacking U.S. citizens, kidnapping five-year-olds and using them as bait, and privately circulating the idea that they can violate the rights of Americans by busting down their doors—they deserve to be defunded, and I’ll take any step in that direction.

All I can wish for at this point is sanity returns more quickly than an epidemic.
And just like that, the US has left the World Health Organization.

Link goes to the official announcement—lies pretending to justify a decision that will kill countless numbers—from people too stupid to even include a proper twittercard.

After ordering new springs and fixing the downrigger, the other one broke today and I FOUND the lost springs in the boat’s glovebox. Apparently the sandwich size ziplock baggie holding a 4x6” card stating “downrigger springs” on it was easily confused with boat registration papers baggie.
Ok, so if you were me and bought a small bag of very small springs (like 3mm diameter and 10mm long) for downrigger repairs seven months ago, where would I have put that bag? Because it ain’t on the boat.
