I’m Ryan, an earth science educator & curriculum developer at two colleges in Central California. I’ve had a hand in some cool virtual field experience innovations, but lately I’m the “Volcano Tissue Box Guy”. I’m pinning my Etsy store link here for when I release batches.

Me, a white guy standing on Johnston Ridge in front of Mount Saint Helens on a partly cloudy day. The mountain is visible with lots of green growth on the landslide zone in the mid ground. I’m leaning on a stone wall with my butt holding a black tissue box cover holder that also looks like Mount Saint Helens. Screenshot of science Fridays website that hosts my virtual field trip to columns of the Giants and Central California. It says science Friday in the top left-hand corner underneath which is a picture of the tallest pile at the columns of the Giants full of brown and black, the salt boulders with a few pine trees in the distance There is a hexagon with a light bulb as a page brake with a title underneath that says embark on a 360° geologic expedition.

geotripper.blogspot.com/2025/10/the-... We hear a great deal about what to do in the event of a major quake, but we don't hear much about what's going to happen in the weeks and months that follow. My new blog gives thought to what will happen around Modesto when the BIG ONE hits. #earthquakes

My quoted tweet below was mocking RFK Jr. because he should know better as head of HHS and someone who claims to 'follow the science.' But also - I think this is a common misconception so I'm going to address it earnestly.

Why do we conduct research, if not to 'make proof?'

I, a scientist, definitely do studies to make proof.

The Weather Prediction Center warns of a moderate risk of excessive rainfall leading to rapid onset flooding in Arizona tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 10). If this level is maintained, it would be the first time in more than two years the agency has issued a moderate ERO in AZ. #AZwx

I guess y’all should get your eastern Sierra leaf-peeping in on Saturday. Can’t imagine much will be left of this storm verifies.

Some early rain and snow forecast totals from the National Weather Service... the National Blend of Models is bullish on feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada. Very unusual for mid-October.

The city of Kotzebue is under mandatory evacuation orders. That's as the community prepares for flooding the National Weather Service warns could be worse than last year's, which led to dozens of evacuations and two families losing their homes.
Mandatory evacuations ordered in Kotzebue as flooding from coastal storm begins
Water could rise as much as 10 feet above the high tide line, according the National Weather Service.

I remember McCarthy’s but I don’t drink and I only went to bars to drive friends home or see shows. I was back last summer and soooooo much has changed. I was completely disoriented in downtown. I did see the aquabats and blink-182 at Flippos roller rink in Morro. Craaaazy

:-). Having lived in SLO for 5yrs, I think I earned my “adopted local” card. Man, I wish I could have afforded a $200k house in 2001 when I graduated.

LOL, well… a busload of valley college students that don’t have much in the way of rain gear and learning outcomes don’t quite align. We got smoked last year after squeezing in a morning, and it was a cold, wet bus ride back. Even though it was definitely an experience :-)

Are shuttles running?

You’re a SLO guy? Did I know that?
