I’m Ryan, an earth science educator & curriculum developer at two colleges in Central California. I’ve had a hand in some cool virtual field experience innovations, but lately I’m the “Volcano Tissue Box Guy”. I’m pinning my Etsy store link here for when I release batches.

Following the #HayliGubbi eruption, our paper on the Erta Ale dike of Jun-Jul is finally out. InSAR, optical data and seismicity showed the temporal evolution of the intrusion and the interaction of magmatic sources, including a sill inflation in Hayli Gubbi. @earth-science.bsky.social #geoscience

I need to etch a model of this amoeba onto my Lassen tissue box covers, LOL.
So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

This is going to be very popular* at all the parks’ gateway towns that rely almost entirely on tourism.

*popular in the sense that I foresee this being protested out of existence by the gateway communities that in many case are, ironically, MAGA-majority.

The mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew was just snagged by ICE in what *appears* to be a very targeted disappearing.
I’m not saying ICE wouldn’t come to Revere, MA just because…

Actually that is what I’m saying.

Campi Flegrei and Vesuvius in the Bay of Naples area are extremely hazardous. Millions of people live in or near restless volcanoes. Not sure if we're looking at a catastrophic eruption in our lifetime, but a repeat of 1538 Monte Nuovo would still be dramatic.

The #HayliGubbi eruption came after a period of unrest that started in June-July 2025 with a large dike intrusion in the southern sector of the Erta Ale rift. Our InSAR study will be out soon but you can have a summary at the link below. @earth-science.bsky.social #geoscience

Places in red measured their lowest Nov. 24 snow depth on record. Some of the sites are low elevation and have many years of zero snow depth on this date, but there's a number of sites at higher elevation that should be covered in snow at this point.

Whelp… we *were* going to go fishing at Fleming Meadows on Don Pedro but the fog was too ridiculous, so we’re driving up to Moccasin hoping it’s above the inversion. Looking down back towards the Central Valley the fog layer was pretty rad.

Camped at Salton Sea State Recreation Area. I walked out of my tent to the water & saw a raft of ~1k redheads one morning. Cactus wrens were a great alarm clock. The harbor at the visitor center no longer reaches the shoreline. Saw hundreds of blue-winged teals!
