A magnitude 4.7 earthquake rattled Salt Lake City on Thursday. Although large earthquakes are (eventually) expected on the nearby Wasatch Fault, this event occurred to the east, near the intriguing Bear River Fault Zone. Was it responsible? We take a look.

The Washington Post published a clear video of federal agents removing Alex Pretti's handgun moments before he was fatally shot. There's nothing in the video to suggest Pretti even reached for his weapon.

The bestest boy is 1 today! He’s already had so many adventures and has brought so much joy during these dark times. Heres to many more years of adventures! (Thanks to @drwendyrocks.bsky.social for first and last pics).

Today is my daily observation # 4,949 for CoCoRaHS, but my first-ever snowfall report!
We got a whopping 0.8 inches of snow from this beast of a winter storm. 😒
It's pretty!

“We can not fund DHS without” is an inherently disqualifying sentence and if you’re in Connecticut please call Sen Murphy tomorrow to let him know that.
We should not fund DHS without serious reform. We could return CBP to border. We could require warrants for immigration arrests. We could beef up training and require identification.

The list of possible reforms is long. What's unacceptable is the current lawless status quo.

as a parent I cannot imagine how absolutely fucking heartbreaking and awful it must be to have to put out a statement like this because the federal government killed your son and is telling monstrous lies about him
Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti.

"Please get the truth out about our son."

The fact of the matter is: a severe #IceStorm is developing across much of the country at this very moment, with potentially devastating and far-reaching consequences extending far beyond the region of maximum #ice concentration. Watch out for the #ice, and help your neighbors weather the storm.
CNN: DHS officials have come to FEMA staff and told them to limit the use of the word ice…they are worried that by posting something like, watch out for the ice, that it's going to become a meme….

The 2026 National Defense Strategy has dropped. I worked on the last one. As far as I can tell, no mentions of climate, energy, minerals, base resilience, natural disasters, wildfires. The defense industrial base gets a nod but pretty hand-wavy. I'll have more to say early next week.

Fun fact: when bluesky was invite-only, we got our invite from AOC
AOC: An agency that is attacking U.S. citizens, kidnapping five-year-olds and using them as bait, and privately circulating the idea that they can violate the rights of Americans by busting down their doors—they deserve to be defunded, and I’ll take any step in that direction.

All I can wish for at this point is sanity returns more quickly than an epidemic.
And just like that, the US has left the World Health Organization.

Link goes to the official announcement—lies pretending to justify a decision that will kill countless numbers—from people too stupid to even include a proper twittercard.
