GREAT NEWS from Leander ISD. To Kill a Mockingbird, House on Mango St, and Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass will be returned to classrooms after a massive outcry. Thanks to everyone who spoke up!!!

From an email to teachers today:
*An important update regarding the books that
were previously paused from curriculum use as a
result of concerns around Senate Bill 12.
Thirty-six of the forty books are being reinstated
to the secondary curriculum book list, with
revisions made to the curriculum to ensure TEKS
alignment and compliance with SB 12. Four
titles, Stamped, Melissa (George), Gracefully
Grayson, and The 57 Bus, will remain paused for
additional review of curriculum alignment. Please
note that all books, including these four, should
remain available, or be returned if removed, to
classroom libraries for individual student choice
reading.

Come see me this afternoon, Austin! I’ll be there to teach about the books that are being forced off of shelves in Texas today, the threats to the freedom to read that Texans face next, and steps we can take to stop book banning in its tracks!

Great write-up from Kelly Jensen on the disaster in Leander ISD, which "paused" the classroom use of To Kill a Mockingbird, The House on Mango Street, & The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass due to the climate of fear that exists around books in Texas right now: bookriot.com/leander-sb-13/

Removing To Kill a Mockingbird and The House on Mango Street from Texas classrooms does not protect Texas kids. The Texas GOP and Governor Abbott need to answer for this. Shameful.

The Escambia Board is arguing that our libraries are “government speech” that can be restricted as elected officials choose.

Also, they don’t believe they should be deposed to explain those decisions to the public and the court.

When they were banning my books, I found out who they were and disproved all their dishonesty and dunked on them so hard and so often both in their communities and to the world that they stopped trying.

Try it, everyone! It's super fun and effective! If we all do it, maybe we can save ALL the books

I need help getting this CRAZY censorship story out!

Last week, admins in Leander ISD emailed teachers telling them to “pause” use of 40 books relating to “DEI” that had previously been curriculum or choice reading activities.

Included on the list? To Kill a Mockingbird. #bookbans #booksky
Email to 6th-grade teachers in Leander ISD that reads:

Dear 6th Grade ELA Team,
I want to share an Important update regarding some of the texts in our book club and
whole-class reading collections. In response to new legislation outlined in Senate Bill 12 (89th
Legislature), we have conducted a review of titles currently used in secondary ELA instruction.
Because SB 12 prohibits specific types of content, several of our resources now require
additional review.
Effective immediately, please pause the use of the identified texts (linked below) in
instruction and assignments until further notice. This step is necessary to ensure our
curriculum remains in full compliance with the law.
I want to emphasize that these books are not being permanently removed. They are simply on
hold while we seek additional guidance from TASB and TEA regarding the implications of SB 12
for instructional resources. Once we receive that guidance, we will provide clear updates about
next steps. Additionally, if these books are included in your own personal classroom library, we
request that you remove them since personal classroom libraries are considered instructional
resources.
I know this timing is far from ideal and may present challenges, especially given the thoughtful
preparation you have invested in building engaging reading experiences for students. Please
know that our commitment to offering students a wide range of meaningful opportunities for
choice reading and discussion remains unchanged.
Thank you for your flexibility, professionalism, and continued dedication to our students as we
navigate this process together.
6th grade ELAR Resources
With appreciation, List of 40 books removed from classes. Includes To Kill a Mockingbird, The House on Mango Street, The Fire Next Time, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and, weirdly, Les Miserables.

(Sorry to burst your bit of pleasant surprise, but the list went out to all middle and high school ELA teachers)
frankstrong.bsky.social
I will say--Leander ISD has a great board and really dedicated teachers and librarians. I think we can get this fixed! The bigger problem is the state.
frankstrong.bsky.social
Finally, we need to start putting pieces together. We’re not fighting one bill—we’re fighting a movement that wants to restrict ideas & is happy to do it bit by bit. When you email your reps, tell them to STOP listening to extremists like Moms for Liberty & START listening to librarians & teachers.
But, finally, we need to put some puzzle pieces together. Again, SB12 is far from the only book-banning bill that was passed last session. Many of the lawmakers who voted for Senate Bill 13 justified their votes by saying they weren’t voting to remove books for the ideas they contain. But then virtually all of them voted for Senate Bill 12, too. We need to let lawmakers know we see how these laws work together, that we’re not stupid, and that we’re not going to stand for them dismantling our Constitution bit by bit.
frankstrong.bsky.social
Every Republican in the Tx House and Senate voted for SB12. Its author was Brandon Creighton ([email protected]); its House sponsor was Jeff Leach ([email protected])
frankstrong.bsky.social
Next: We need to let the lawmakers behind SB12 know what they have wrought. In The Fire Next Time (a book removed from LISD under SB12), James Baldwin said, "It is not permissible that the authors of devastation should also be innocent." Texans: Email your Tx Rep & Senator.
frankstrong.bsky.social
Basically the call to action is threefold: First, we need to get these books back into LISD classrooms. LISD’s board is meeting 10/9, and has a chance to rectify this mistake. They need to know that the public does NOT support unconstitutional removal of books for the ideas they contain.
frankstrong.bsky.social
(As an aside, the list also contains Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. How can that be considered a “DEI” book? That’s what happens when you use AI. People: Think for yourselves and stop using hallucinating robots to make decisions.)
frankstrong.bsky.social
Apparently, AI was used to measure instructional texts against a rubric that took into account “DEI content.”
