The continuous rain 🌧️ during the last couple of days let up this afternoon. It was nice to get out of the house 🏡 for a long walk🚶🏻and a quick coffee ☕️.

The newfangled medevac helicopters 🚁 that pass over the house on the way to Royal Jubilee Hospital are quite quiet but for some reason they cause the kitchen window to rattle loudly. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Not a surprise. The pettiness of conservatives knows no bounds. 🙁

The clouds cleared for a few hours today so I went for a walk over Mt Tolmie and across the university campus before the rain returns.

'On The Origin Of Species', a book that changed the world forever, was published #onthisday, 1859. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, contained within, didn’t just revolutionise science, it had a profound impact on how we view ourselves and our place in the natural world. What a wonderful man.

Upset a friend by stating IMHO the final lyric of The Beatles Norwegian Wood implies arson. I didn’t know this was going to be controversial. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Past is prologue.

In 1933, during the Great Depression, a group of wealthy businessmen tried to overthrow the US government and install a fascist dictator to protect their own interests.

And everything that led to it feels way too familiar right now.

This is not a history lesson, it’s a warning.

“This is a concerning development given the current state of the world, where authoritarian populism is on the rise…If it becomes easy to override Charter rights at the first instance, then the Charter will soon no longer be worth the paper that it’s written on.”
Parties or governments are willing to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause to override rights and to keep the courts from even weighing in on whether their laws would be constitutional or not. They’re not even trying anymore, writes @journodale.bsky.social.

There should be a political cost for using the clause; unfortunately, there isn’t
