It would be really funny if there was a story where there was a really hateable jerk character who's obviously set up to get his comeuppance then when shit goes down they completely shift gears and become the most rational character and everyone else is having trouble taking them seriously

Tired of seeing this discussion for every Action RPG. It's not "cheating" to use the RPG mechanics to gain strength. Why would they even put mechanics in the game they don't want you to use? If they didn't want you to be able to make it easier by levelling up, why include levelling up?
