In the 1960s, scientists studying Brazilian pit viper venom found it lowered blood pressure. They discovered a peptide that inhibited angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which regulates blood pressure. Captopril, an ACE-inhibiting peptide analog, was developed in 1975 as a treatment for high BP.
