I'm so delighted to encounter an unreconstructed prescriptivist with this kind of fervor that I won't screenshot any dictionary definitions. I hope there's another account dedicated to the elimination of "comprised of."

Great talk! Apologies to anyone who assumed this was going to be a DJ set.

It's the last day at #TWS2025 but we've got a pretty good finale lined up.

✔️more efficient grizzly bear monitoring
✔️what's influencing moose population size and trends
✔️where are the moose and where are they going?

Key slide from Darío's hair hormone talk. The molecular biology gets a bit technical, so pay careful attention!

We and our partners have been making steady progress on extracting more grizzly bear population information from hair samples. Dr. Darío Fernández-Bellon presented where the team is at and how we're going to keep pushing it further!

Why is a group of martens called a richness? Many of these "terms of venery" – a pride of lions, a parliament of owls, etc. – were first recorded in the 15th century. At least some seem to have been meant to be satire (or at least amusing). What are your favourites?

That was a big day of talks, but don't leave yet – we have a fun poster in the Exhibit Hall and would love to chat about what we're learning about deer cause of death in caribou ranges! #TWS2025
A scientific poster titled cause-specific mortality of white tailed deer in west-central alberta. it is colourful and contains photos of deer mortality sites and bone marrow

We studied 117 harvest blocks to understand what factors influence bear, wolf, and other carnivore use of these landscape features. Caribou Program lead Dr. @lfinnegal.bsky.social presented results. #TWS2025

Camera traps have a lot of advantages in ecology research, but it's time-consuming to classify images. Dr. Rebecca Viejou presented on how we can use AI to greatly improve efficiency without compromising accuracy. #TWS2025

In Alberta and British Columbia, forest management strategies within woodland caribou ranges are changing in timing, intensity, and spatial arrangement in an effort to reduce the impact on caribou. But what will be the impacts to moose?

Across Canada, there were 139 residential schools which were part of a deliberate system designed to erase Indigenous cultures and dismantle communities.
friresearch.bsky.social
On September 30, Canadians will recognise the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We’re taking time this month to reflect on and share some resources that have helped us better understand the legacy of residential schools and the ongoing impacts of colonialism.

The Moose Research Initiative has been studying key questions related to moose populations, habitat, and monitoring. Because moose are a temperature-limited species, one research theme is the interaction between climate and forest management strategies on moose.
