me reading a book: 'She said thanks and he sputtered.' I can picture the whole scene. It's so vivid. I love this chapter. me writing a book: what if i don't mention the characters' nails and then readers don't think they have nails. i should include the sounds they make on various surfaces so readers know there is sound in this universe. i'll spent today cycling through youtube nail asmrs to ensure i employ only the most precise language for every tippy-tap. i will note each character's nail length in millimeters

For as much as most men don't want to see the world come to nuclear armageddon, virtually all women don't, and for as much as some women clamor for war, far more men do. We'd have better odds of avoiding mutually assured destruction rn if men took a tiny break from politics and let women run the countries.

If you're writing 18th century dialogue, this website lets you search words and phrases to double-check whether they were in use & meant what you intend. It doesn't include every period-accurate use of a word/phrase, but it certainly helped me separate genuine 18th century grammar from the vague tangle of old-fashioned fancy-speak I've internalized from TV and video games.
