End to End encryption is the only thing that provides "true" protection. And even then, it's not 100%.

Telegram hasn't been E2E, except for secret chats. So i don't know why people expected privacy from the app. I wouldn't trust a company who says "Trust me bro.", so this isn't news to me.

Someone else in another reply stated being gay in another country could get you killed. Telegram cooperating with government officials when their laws are being broken will put people at disk despite the fact they've done nothing wrong.

As we're seeing with payment processors. What is being defined as "illegal" is quickly being re-defined, and despite being morally correct, and still carry legal consequence.

I can understand this. There aren't as many crazy consequences in the US unless the content being reported / reviewed is actually allowing illegal activity.

But "Illegal activity" is a term that is very quickly changing, especially in the art field, so I can see why monitoring makes people peeved.

I wouldn't say it's a HUGE overreaction. I can kind of understand why people who were expecting privacy suddenly realize they aren't getting it, but this feels right on par for an app that wasn't end-to-end encrypted.

I dunno about how secret chats work though.

I feel like illegal activity is going to happen on every messaging platform, and seeing numbers like this isn't an immediately red flag to it being "big gov spyware", but I could also just be misunderstanding what the fuss is here?

But hasn't this been like, pretty standard across most social platforms / messaging services? Snap, messenger, tiktok, discord, etc.
