It took me forever to finish this game because I kinda sucked at it for a long time.
Hades is as close to perfect as a game can be. The action is fast-paced, difficult, and satisfying to overcome. The storytelling is expertly woven into the gameplay loop and slowly revealed to you in a way only a video game can. Dying and starting over is something that's been a part of video games since forever. Back to the last save or checkpoint. But in Hades, each of your deaths really happens to Zagreus. Whenever you're sent back down to the bottom of the underworld, people ask how you died. Sometimes they'll fill you in on what they've been doing while you've been trying to escape. Sometimes they'll encourage you to keep going or tease you for another failure. Everyone has so much to say it's impressive how long you can play this game without hearing something repeated. Sometimes it feels like Zagreus is reading my mind and saying just what I was gonna say. One time I interacted with a store, looked at the items, and the thing I wanted the most was the only thing I couldn't afford. Before I even moved or clicked anything on the menu to give an indication of what I wanted, Zag said something like "ah, I can't afford it" as if he was hoping for exactly what I was. This kinda thing happens constantly. And his voice acting sounds flawless on top of that. The best video game stories aren't just the ones that look like movies. Some of the best ones really make use of the fact that a game story can be interactive. A movie or TV series of Hades wouldn't hit the same as a game you had to fight tooth and nail through with each of your own attempts telling more of the tale.

Are you the kind of person that can put up with a game that seems super youcore but also kinda sucks to play? I definitely am because I just finished Koudelka. It's about 12 hours long and a lot of that time was listening to music I didn't like. But I still feel like I enjoyed the experience.
In the first hour or two of playing Koudelka, you might wonder how a game like this didn't get popular. Walking around Nemeton Monastery is enjoyable enough. You get the satisfaction of putting the key item where it goes and opening a door. And wow it's got cool turn based combat with guns! It kinda brings to mind another series that made it's debut on PS1 with Resi style exploration and RPG combat. But the turn based battle system here isn't nearly as solid as that. Battles in Koudelka should come to you pretty naturally if you ever played another game where you fought on a grid. You just move your character into position and attack or cast a spell. Seems like some simple fun right? It's just agonizingly slow. It is sooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooooow. That is earnestly the biggest issue with an otherwise great game. There's so much time wasted in battle. The music started to become really annoying to me too. But it was still worth it to me. The voice acting and FMVs are some of the best you're going to find on the PS1. The party dynamic is so interesting. The way they butt heads feels natural. They often disagree and raise their voices with one another. They also aren't above teasing each other and being snarky. I like that everyone's got layers to them. The backgrounds and character models all look very cool too. Just have your fast forward button on DuckStation at the ready.

Ever since 2007, if you ever caught me like not fully paying attention or lost in my thoughts, I was probably daydreaming about playing Team BRs on Guardian.
Halo 3 is one of the few games I will always be drawn to replaying. It's like an 8 hour grand finale just constantly firing on all cylinders. It makes Combat Evolved and 2 feel so small in comparison. Even though the 360 came out in 2005, it felt like it didn't even matter until Halo 3. This game is core to the identity of the console and to the seventh generation. I don't care about your opinion on any first person shooter at all if you haven't played this game before. I can't even begin to scratch the surface of how important the online community was to me in terms of giving me a place to socialize and make friends. I wouldn't be the same without the people I met on this game.

I think what inspired me to replay Sonic Forces was getting into the IDW comics this year. Obviously catching up on a comic isn't gonna make a game from 2017 play any better. But it helped me find some stuff to appreciate about this game that I couldn't when it was new.
The first time I finished playing Sonic Forces, I thought it was basically a waste of time unless you were really into making your own character. That's still mostly how I feel. The avatar is this game's biggest impact. I like that Forces made an effort to establish that Sonic and his friends aren't the only anthropomorphic animals in their world. Now they have a buncha extra little guys to help fill in the scene in things like the comics, Sonic Racing and Sonic Prime. I think it makes Sonic's world feel more full of life and it was the best thing they could do to accomplish that aside from putting Sonic back into a human city again. The whole resistance storyline isn't very fleshed out and it's unsatisfying how little you got to actually see play out. It's mostly just talking heads. But I like what the end of it would tee up for the comics and the characters. I have to give Sonic Forces some credit for that. But as a game? Everything about Classic Sonic in this game is still terrible. Modern Sonic faired a little better this time. I'm more into the boost style than I was when I first played this game. But being more well versed in those boost games made it even more apparent how lacking the level design is in Forces. The cute or traumatized looking animal you make doesn't have bad gameplay, they're actually pretty fun. But a lot of their levels can feel like the lesser parts of modern Sonic's levels. But this playthrough I noticed when swinging the whip wisp that you're completely invincible so it's easy to trivialize it if you don't like it. Time was unusually kind to Sonic Forces, but only by a tiny little bit.

Halo 2 is a big upgrade from CE. The level design is so much better than the first. There's the occasional one that feels like it goes on too long but there's nothing as boring as CE's most boring parts. There's more weapons, some you can hold two of. There's more vehicles. There's more everything. The first game made a great case for the future of fps on console but Halo 2 is what made the series legendary. The fucking arbiter is in it. But for this playthrough I was just focused on the Anniversary version and didn't play with the old graphics at all because I've only done so once. The remastered visuals in Halo 2: Anniversary are a much better effort than 343's first attempt. Sometimes readability is sacrificed for pretty effects like when firing the carbine. The glowing effects of it's shots making an impact are very exaggerated compared to the original. But for the most part the team did a fair job complimenting the art of the original and even enhancing it in some areas. Sometimes I would forget I was playing on the new graphics and I think that's a compliment. What would give it away though was the new sound effects. Some of the most iconic ones like the battle rifle and energy sword are way too different for my liking. But the remastered music is incredible across the board. Whenever I want to listen to Halo 2 music, I always go for the Anniversary version these days. They some how couldn't get the Breaking Benjamin track back though. The most drastic change from the original is the cutscenes. The old in-engine cutscenes have been completely redone as prerendered ones by Blur Studio. While there is obviously a charm to the old in-engine cutscenes, I can't deny how cool it is to watch what is basically a super faithful CGI movie adaptation of Halo 2. Still blew me away.

Going through everything in MCC in co-op. I'm never really *that* excited to play CE. All those hallways just start to bore me after a while. I think this game is at it's best when you get to take part in big battles out in the open.
Certainly a legendary game in 2001 but it's easier to be annoyed at the parts I don't like after replaying it so many times like the obviously repetitive environments. But I still find things to appreciate too. Over the last few years I have started to appreciate the smaller and more tightly balanced sandbox a little more. The shotgun and plasma rifle never feel as good to use again as they do in this one. But I know things get a lot better than this in terms of level design, story, weapon variety, characters, and even the music. Things also get a lot worse too though, oh god. Even almost 25 years later, Halo's impact can still be felt on the FPS genre. It remains worth playing today if you love games enough to appreciate the historical significance of one.

I played Fear the Spotlight while it was free on the Fortnite launcher. Pretty good gateway horror game.
"No books, just trusty old internet forums!" I was really impressed by the scale of this game. Not as in "whoa this game is so big" but the scale as in the size of your character compared to the objects around you in the environment. The way you interact with everything to solve puzzles feels really nice and tactile. I enjoyed how there were some items you'd use more than once and in different ways. It's the difference between a hammer in your inventory actually kinda feeling like a hammer or just feeling like a hammer shaped key. Honestly it's hard for me to judge horror games where there's no combat because hiding and waiting for a scary thing to pass isn't typically what I consider fun gameplay. But I didn't seem to mind that I was doing a lot of that here because the actual puzzles were very fun. The scares here aren't reliant on jumpscares and it isn't a gorefest so it's easy to recommend Fear the Spotlight to people that want something just a little spooky for Halloween but can't take something more violent. More seasoned fans of the genre might find themselves laughing when they aren't supposed to. But if you give it a chance, you might find there's actually many other things to like about it than just how scary or not scary it is.

I couldn't wait for October to start marathoning scary games so I started on Sunday. While the REmake inspiration was very clear to me, there is still more Tormented Souls could've learned from it. But it's a promising game when it's focused on what makes it unique. Glad they're doing a sequel.
Caroline walking down a dark hallway with only her lighter to guide her. "An old magnetophon. It looks like it works. Recording my progress might be useful if anything happens to me." Save items are limited like classic Resident Evil. A pretty amateur survival horror trip through an abandoned hospital. You play as a super fashionable woman named Caroline that was led there with a photograph. I was actually pretty drawn to trying this game because of her cute outfit. As one would expect, she navigates the premises like a tank (affectionate) and solves some pretty difficult puzzles while trying not to get killed by a scary monster. There's no inventory management to worry about here, Caroline can hold everything she finds. There's still a lot of backtracking as is so an unlimited inventory size was the right choice for this game. Occasionally the fixed camera angles changed a bit too rapidly and it was disorienting and made me miss stuff at first glance. But other times it feels like the game was shot beautifully. Sometimes walking down a long hall with just the lighter as your only light source had me feeling like I was in a movie scene. The lighting and shadows were really impressive even playing the worst version of the game. I wouldn't really recommend the Switch version of this game unless it's your only choice or you're just weirdly obsessed with the Switch like me. It's enough of a visual downgrade that I could see it being distracting for some people.

This didn't make a soulslike fan out of me but it did help me understand the appeal a little bit more. What an unforgettable setting. Very inspired use of something in public domain without coming off like they're going for the low hanging fruit of "what if a story for kids was graphically violent?"
I was interested in this game based on how it looked but I am always immediately wary when I hear something is soulslike. My mind just can't help but jump to the things I usually hate about games like that. But this is the one for me. Even though most of the reasons this game is going to stay with me after the fact are for things like it's story, art direction, and music, it would be a useless game on my console if it wasn't fun. This is the most fun I've ever had with a soulslike. Combat in Lies of P is focused more on parrying than blocking or dodging. The excellent sound design often really helped me find the rhythm to an enemy's attacks and it was always satisfying to hear that sweet symphony of perfect parries. I played the game after they updated it to have different difficulty options, but I wanted it raw so I went with the hardest one which is the old default. The checkpoints are well placed in terms of proximity to the boss you just died at too, which made me feel like the game was earnestly testing my skill rather than my patience. Even the hardest fights that I had to try for more than an hour felt approachable and it always felt like my own fault when I lost and super satisfying when I won. Why does everyone have an Italian name but only one person has an Italian accent?

It feels good to finish a game in a genre you don't usually fuck with and come out the other side thinking it was basically perfect.
Wow I missed one of the best games on the GBA. The only thing I wish they added was a way to zoom in on the map because I really should get glasses. It sucks to be unlucky with the drops but hey couldn't be me. The brevity of this game is one of it's biggest strengths too. It's not really vast enough to get lost in and I always get lost in these kind of games. I'd recommend trying this even if other search action games didn't work for you. The art style of Castlevania (especially Ayami Kojima's character art) is so eye catching that it's the reason I want to be into these games. I was not disappointed! I loved the detail put into all the enemies. When you attack a witch it turns into a little cat and runs away. Maids bow and welcome you before attacking you. There was so much creativity and care from the developers.

Also wanna shout out the museum section they added to this remastered version. It has artwork that has comments from the artists on some pictures and the music player has comments from the composers on every song. I like this kind of thing.
