I like the Másòyìnbó show, a lot. But some words flagged as 'English' should actually be acceptable as Yorùbá words.

For instance, I maintain a there's a difference between English 'party' and Yorùbá 'patí', even they're pronounced almost the same by Nigerians. 🐦🐦

Fun linguistics tidbit:

Mark Hamill signing his name Mar🐫 because in English /p, t, k/ sounds at the beginning of a stressed syllable are pronounced aspirated, ie with an extra breathy sound (the same sound that's h when it's by itself)

So Mark Hamill is pronounced the same as Mar Camel

💙, Mar🐫

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

No other species has ever learned a human language (vocal or signed). Many species can learn to recognize—and even produce—impressive numbers of words/signs, but they can't seem to acquire the grammar.
Sign languages are not universal. Just like spoken languages, they are tied to specific people and places and are not nutually intelligible. To date, over 200 independent sign languages exist across the globe (and counting).

For Science Magazine, I wrote about "The Metaphors of Artificial Intelligence".

The way you conceptualize AI systems affects how you interact with them, do science on them, and create policy and apply laws to them.

Hope you will check it out!

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects

So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social?

And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?
