Hey Philly! Want to learn about all the cool science that goes on in the city (including my research)? Come to Start Talking Science at the Science History Institute next Friday, 10/3! Website in the comments!
Image to advertise the event. At the top it says “Science History Institute Museum & Library”, then the main part of the image has two speaking bubbles overlapping with the words, “Start Talking Science Share. Learn. Connect.” over them

Got to check out the new part of the Schuylkill trail tonight on my run. I’m obsessed with the suspension bridge! Philly is seriously the best city
Picture of the part of the Schuylkill trail that leads up to the suspension bridge. It’s a bright sunny day and there are barely any clouds in the sky.

These private grant orgs really said, “We hear that you need more support right now with the funding crisis. We’re actually going to suspend our fellowships until things settle down.”

So disappointed in the groups that were supposed to be leaders in the future of science.

That’s what it sounds like to me too, which I can understand but also feel as though the early career scientists need more help getting established

Finding out HHMI is canceling the Hanna H. Gray Fellows competition is heartbreaking. Especially since if they decide to hold it next year, I’ll no longer be eligible
Email from HHMI. Subject is: [External] Update on the 2025 Hanna H. Gray Fellows Competition.
Gray box says: Some people who received this message don’t often get email (the a red cross out of the email) why this is important.
Email reads: Dear HGF Applicant:

I am writing to share that HHMI has made the difficult decision to pause all competitions as we work to ensure continued support for our scientists at a challenging moment for science and science funding. This means that we are not proceeding with the 2025 Hanna H. Gray Fellows Competition.

We received hundreds of thoughtful and inspiring applications, reaffirming the importance of supporting early career scientists through the transition from postdoc to faculty. We thank you for the time, effort, and care you put into your application materials.

Bests,
Leslie

All I'm saying is, the "Me me me me me more leftist than you" people on this app DIDNT EVEN VOTE.

Don't listen to any of those dumb motherfuckers, they helped pave the road to hell, and they're still doing it.

📣 Across the U.S., cuts to federal funding for health research are projected to cause losses of $16B and 68,500 jobs. How will YOUR area be impacted?

Excited to share SCIMaP, a website that our team has created to communicate the impact of funding cuts. #PsychSciSky #MedicalSky

This essay does a great job explaining why funding basic science is so important and benefits everyone. Please read and encourage your elected officials to continue funding scientific research! neighborhoodscientist.org/posts/2025/w...

We showed that influenza virus strains circulating the year you’re born imprint your immune system and prime you to respond better to closely related strains. In this case, folks born when H1N1 or H2N2 were circulating have antibodies that recognize H5N1 t.co/kPLUcV2975

So excited to announce my second publication from my postdoc, “Immune history shapes human antibody responses to H5N1 influenza viruses”, that was published today in Nature Medicine! (Link in next tweet). Truly a group effort between our lab and our collaborators.

Stand up, fight back! #standupforscience
Image of Gabby standing with her friend Alex holding signs. at the stand up for science Philly protest. Alex’s sign reads, “Science Saves Lives” and Gabby’s reads, “Science Not Silence”. Image of protesters with an Erlenmeyer flask shaped sign reading, “Science serving the common good”. Protesters and there’s a variety of signs in the background. The most legible reads, “Science saves lives not billionaires” More protesters and a sign that has a picture of the muppet Beaker on it and reads, “This is the only orange muppet I trust to tell me about science”.

Posting this from months ago because we DO have homegrown experience with autocratic regimes in this country.

In nearly half this country during the first 6 decades of the 20th century Black people lived under systems of cruelty, voter suppression, hate, state violence & corruption. Ask them!

Is there an award for the most attractive NFL team? Because the @philadelphiaeagles.bsky.social would clearly win. Completely unrelated, but if there any Eagles players who are single are interested in dating a Philly scientist, I’m available 🤗

Seen in the supermarket today. Even if the current avian flu outbreak doesn’t cause widespread human infections, it’s still a big issue that we need to continue to monitor.
Sign on a refrigerator at a grocery store that says, “Important Info. You may notice a price increase on eggs at this time due to the recent Avian influenza outbreak in the Midwest. We apologize for any inconvenience. Giant”
