i truly do sympathize with you. i've struggled with similar issues of self-doubt and it can be extremely hard to tell when you'll escape those thoughts. for me, one day it felt impossible and the next day it suddenly didn't. it's not one single change, it's a culmination of a lot of self-examination

it will take a while, because that premise has likely infected a lot of your conclusions and it will take a long time to examine each premise that builds up to this feeling that you're not good enough, but from personal experience simply noticing those thought patterns is enough to overcome them

when you have a discouraging thought, try to examine it and see if it might align with a premise that isn't objectively true (e.g. you're inferior to people around you). it only feels true because it's familiar. you can start identifying the root of those thoughts and start to dismantle them.

it WILL get easier, but it's going to take a paradigm shift in your mind, and the first step of that shift is accepting that it's hard right now.
December 1, 2025 at 11:49 PM
and i don't think the problem is that it's too hard for you, it's that you think it should be easier based on how you perceive others. creation is easiest when you enjoy the process, and the current process will be a struggle, so you have to learn to enjoy the struggle on some level.
December 1, 2025 at 11:48 PM
again, i think you're comparing yourself with an ideal self they're presenting via social media. i promise you nearly everyone struggles with something. your first step might be accepting that creation is going to be a struggle for you. it will get easier with time, but it's hard!
December 1, 2025 at 11:45 PM
if you find you can't help compare yourself to others and creation is a priority for you, then it might make sense to limit your time with social media. both iphone and android let you limit time on apps or you can install extensions on your browser that will do the same for certain websites.

most of them got there by failing in some degree. it takes practice to not struggle -- you have to learn all the ways you can fail; you have to learn what motivates you, specifically. you have to learn when you're approaching burnout and how to avoid it.
December 1, 2025 at 11:37 PM
i've found comparing myself to others often isn't very productive. maybe reframing creation as "learning" rather than trying to achieve an end goal might help you. the most important aspect of creating things is enjoying the process of creating, so try to find an environment that lets you do that.
December 1, 2025 at 11:08 PM
i think there are a couple things here:

1) social media means you're often comparing yourself to some of the best people in the world

2) a lot of creators keep their internal struggles private

oooh how was the implementation? and what did you use? built-in godot, steam, something different? i've been curious how much work godot mp is and how much you get ootb

chairs aren't made in a vacuum -- they're informed by other chairs
November 16, 2025 at 8:27 PM
it starts to feel more like communication if you compare chairs -- you get to see what aspects the designer emphasizes vs other designers' chairs or over their previous designs. a lot of the narrative of Metroid is implied via the way the games differ from each other
November 16, 2025 at 8:27 PM
again, you're allowed to have a preference, but i reject the idea it's more "real", especially when those other aspects are so clearly intentional and consonate with the experience of play. the thematic elements in Metroid don't cheapen it for me, they enhance.
November 16, 2025 at 8:03 PM
you don't think communication includes feelings or moods? to be clear, my "communication" includes things that are inarticulable though language. art exists because it can communicate things you can't communicate through language alone.

games are different than other media because of x does not imply x is the most important thing in all games
November 16, 2025 at 6:48 PM
from my perspective all these things are tools the designer uses to communicate something, and what's most important is context and audience sensitive. you can connect with one aspect more but i'll have a hard time being convinced one is more "real" than the other
November 16, 2025 at 6:38 PM
this is also not my experience as a musician fwiw!! sometimes those other aspects are MORE fundamental than the chord. it all depends on it's intended function in the song.

Metroid 2 you fight the same boss dozens of times -- at first they're intimidating/difficult but it quickly becomes rote. Fusion's x virus enemies require you to run into them to collect them or they'll spread immediately and they hit way harder than enemies in other entries.
November 16, 2025 at 6:23 PM
the motivation of Samus is real because it's pretty explicitly communicated both through text in later iterations and in gameplay. like what you DO in 2 & Fusion feels very different than 1
November 16, 2025 at 5:45 PM
you've arbitrarily decided that mechanics are more real than other ways creators can communicate with players. i also think you're using a different standard for games than other media, unless you don't think about motivation in books, movies, a painting, etc
