Maranatha Crane's name is an homage to Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

"Ichabod" means "No glory" or "The glory has departed" in Hebrew, referring to the capturing of the Ark of the Covenant in 1 Samuel 4:21.

It is an expression of lament, and was partly chosen by Irving for his protagonist in reference to Ichabod's disgrace and departure at the story's conclusion.

"Maranatha" is Aramaic for "Our Lord, come!" or "Our Lord has come," referring to the Second Coming of Christ in 1 Corinthians 16:22.

It is an expression of victory, and I chose it to signify Maranatha's relentlessness against the Dullahan (her "Headless Horseman") and other unfeelie Fae.

Two different versions of Maranatha (the Warrior and the Writer) cross paths in "Summer's End V."

At some point in the sixth grade, I saw Halloween III (1982) and The Terminator (1984), which both gave me nightmares.

In one dream, I saw kids being atomized by a demonic computer; in another, hordes of killer robots were blasting their way out from a haunted house for some reason.

These nightmares became the basis for CROM 9000 and its interdimensional robot invasion of Earth.

In high school, I discovered the work of Nigel Kneale, whose films combine science fiction with folk horror in some very unsettling ways.

(Like when hauntings turn out to be caused by geological anomalies in "The Stone Tape," or when "the devil" turns out to have been a race of ancient astronauts in "Quatermass and the Pit.")

Pretty much everything to do with Dr. Adam Quantamaker and his nefarious Quantamaker Group—including the Banshee, CROM 9000, the Stonehenge Tape, and the Neverdead—is an homage to Kneale's work.

Interest in Kneale bloomed into a full-blown passion for British folk and sci-fi horror, which is where my ideas about the Fae started to surface.

The Hamadruid first appeared in a short story I wrote called "The Green Cathedral," which was unfortunately quite terrible and will never see the light of day.

My maternal grandfather joined the ancestors in 1993, and this was my first experience of death. I missed him so badly, I dreamed up a grandpa who would literally always be there for his kids and grandkids (because he's undead).

Somehow, I blended this together with reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and trying to write a different kind of "slasher" story. This became the saga of Sawyer Wynn and the Neverdead.

I actually wrote the Sawyer Wynn story as a screenplay when I was 16; but it was extremely confusing and not very well-written at all. I'm much happier with the story as it exists now in "Summer's End IV."

Sawyer Wynn is named after the Celtic festival of Samhain. He was originally named "Samuel Hain" before I learned that Samhain is pronounced "SOW-in" in Gaelic.

In middle school, some neighborhood friends and I would run around every October, pretending this horrible goblin monster was on the loose and only we could stop it on Halloween. This game became the story of three unknown kids—Skull, Bones and Deadpan—on their quest against the evil Bucca Dhu.

The Het-Sem-Peckinpah character comes from frustrations I had with "killer mummy" movies, where the mummies always want to kidnap women they think are reincarnations of their ancient lovers.

I wanted to see a mummy who's got more important shit to do, like jump out of helicopters, explode through walls, and clobber bank robbers.

Then he wouldn't HAVE to kidnap anyone, because people would already be lining up outside his tomb just to get his autograph (which he would naturally write in hieroglyphics).

Christopher Cushing—the actor who plays Het-Sem—is named after Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, but is also inspired by Tony Todd (a.k.a. the Candyman and Worf's brother) and Stephen Williams (a.k.a. "X" in The X-Files, "Creighton Duke" in Jason Goes To Hell, and "Rufus" in TV's Supernatural).

The Chiroptera character comes from reading Batman comics and wondering what might happen if the titular character were a supervillian, rather than a superhero.

This seemed like a good nemesis for Het-Sem-Peckinpah to fight in the in-universe fictional movies my "Summer End" characters would watch on TV every Halloween.

The "Summer's End" series is a hexology of instrumental electronic albums that are "soundtracks" for imaginary Halloween-themed horror films.

They feature characters and story ideas from my childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, etc. Some are almost as old as I am.

I had trouble figuring out how all the stories are supposed to go, until I finally had the idea of writing "soundtracks" for them, or of "writing the stories as music."

Three of the albums—I, III, and V—are in color, and are meant to be more "PG-13." The other three—II, IV, and VI—are in black-and-white, and are meant to be more "R-Rated."

The first album is in color, and it establishes the fictional town of Wyrdham, Pennsylvania, founded by witches. It's like a "documentary" showing what a "normal" Halloween in Wyrdham might "look" (or sound) like. Most of the plot happens in "Haunted House," with trick-or-treaters encountering the Boogeyman at the Old Hackmore Place.

Summer's End II (the first B&W album) is a total 180. This one introduces the theme of Wyrdham being a "nexus" between the worlds, and of interdimensional visitors like the Fae. It's also much darker and meaner than the first album, with some pretty apocalyptic shit happening, including the first appearance of CROM 9000.

Summer's End III, the second color album, returns to a version of Wyrdham more like the original, but with characters traveling between different versions of the town. This one also introduces Hobb's Tree and the Three Reapers: Skull, Bones and Deadpan.

Summer's End IV, the second B&W album, is a point of intersection between this series and my "Shieldmaidens of Set" trilogy. It introduces one of my oldest characters, Sawyer Wynn, and it builds further on the mad scientist themes from SE2. In some ways, this one might be my personal favorite.

Summer's End V, the final color album, is an insane comic book-style crossover event, revisiting characters from both the color and B&W albums. It's also like a "Choo…

Just in time for Thanksgiving.

Some people are talking about handing out canned goods on Halloween, in addition to candy. I'm putting together a box of canned foods with a sign in the yard saying "Please help yourselves," so people can grab some cans and stuff if they need them, without any conversation. We’ll still have the traditional candy option too.

I've seen threads where people suggest similar ideas, and where conservative dude-bros jump in, calling them names and laughing that no one will take the cans. All I see are monsters disguised as people, mocking others for their suffering. It seems they object to the very idea that even their own neighbors might privately involve themselves in community giving. I doubt the J-Man would be so stingy about giving people free bread, fish and wine.

Sharing community resources is built into the entire point of both Halloween and Thanksgiving. We are about to enter the darkest and most ominous half of the year, when people are traditionally more likely to die from cold, hunger, sickness, etc. If there is anything I tried to communicate in "Summer's End VI" this year, it's that empathy, dignity, and compassion are especially critical at such liminal times as these.

So let's try and bring some sacred Samhain bonfire light into the situation. It ain't gonna break my bank to put out some free cans. If that means some family doesn't completely starve for Thanksgiving, that's what I'll do, by Set. And fuck whatever the dudebros think.
