Prevent deterministic misinterpretations of forecast uncertainty. People tend to misinterpret probabilities in a deterministic way (Joslyn and LeClerc, 2013). For instance, when asked which of three descriptions is the best interpretation of a forecast of a 30% chance of rain tomorrow, most people choose the interpretation that it will rain in 30% of the forecast area or 30% of the forecast time (Murphy et al. 1980; Gigerenzer et al. 2005) over the correct probabilistic interpretation: it will rain on 30% of days with this forecast. Although people's answers may indicate that they are partly aware of the spatial and temporal uncertainty inherent in any forecast (i.e. about where or when it will rain), deterministic misinterpretations are nevertheless a cause for concern. Such misinterpretations imply that if it does not rain anywhere in the forecast area or time period, the forecast constitutes a false alarm – even though a lack of rain is still reconcilable within the correct, probabilistic interpretation.

Understanding probability information Many studies also examine how people understand and interpret probability information. Often, these studies simply give subjects a probability of precipitation forecast (PoP) and ask them to interpret it in order to assess their level of understanding. Gigerenzer et al. (2005), Morss et al. (2008), Sink (1995), Zabini et al. (2015), and Abraham et al. (2015) all show, to various degrees, that a majority or a substantial proportion of the public is unable to give the correct interpretation of a PoP forecast, generally considered to be something like “it will rain somewhere in the forecast area on X% of days like today” (Gigerenzer et al. 2005; Morss et al. 2008; Sink 1995; Zabini et al. 2015; Abraham et al. 2015). However, Juanchich and Sirota (2019) argue that previous studies use a cumbersome “correct” answer, and that “X% of simulations predict rain in the forecast area” is a more “fluent” and more easily understood response category; when using this “correct” answer, the vast majority are able to give the correct PoP interpretation (Juanchich and Sirota 2019). Another prior study, Murphy et al. (1980), argues something similar—that “people do not have trouble understanding what ‘30% chance’ means, but . . . they do have trouble understanding exactly what the probability refers to in this kind of forecast” (Murphy et al. 1980). These findings should reassure forecasters that the public can correctly understand probabilities but should underscore the need to explain the events the forecast refers to in an intuitive and clear way.

National Weather Service forecasts cover 2.5 km grids, which is an area of roughly 1.5 square miles. Most Australians have no idea that a convicted male sex offender who identifies as a woman is currently serving a sentence at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, a women's prison in Victoria. Known in court documents as Hilary Maloney, the man filmed himself abusing his five-year-old daughter and shared the footage with a pedophile in the US. Maloney was originally charged under his male name and housed in male accommodation while on bail. Yet at sentencing, the judge compared his crimes to those “commonly seen in females charged with sexual offences”, and handed down a lighter sentence. Gender ideology has no place in the justice system. In Victoria it is not only endangering female inmates, but it has becomes “get out of jail card” for male sex offenders. Maloney is not the first case. It has been three years since female inmates at Dame Phyllis Frost petitioned authorities to remove another trans-identified male sex offender from their prison. The man already had prior convictions for grievous bodily harm and the rape and sexual abuse of his six-year-old daughter, and he was re-incarcerated for sexually assaulting a woman, with intent to rape, on a Melbourne street The response by authorities has been shameful. In the first case, then premier Daniel Andrews and former minister for women Natalie Hutchins were missing in action, while then minister for equality Harriet Shing dismissed women's concerns and echoed platitudes about transgender rights. Women's rights in prison have been under scrutiny for some time. Women say they are often bullied by staff when trying to lodge complaints, which is consistent with the findings of the Ombudsman Report in 2017. Security in female prisons is much lower compared to male prisons. In 2021, a female inmate in the Murray Unit at Dame Phyllis Frost attempted to kill a fellow inmate with gardening shears The victim was able to fight back and only suffered a minor stab wound. If the perpetrator had been male, the outcome could have been fatal. In reality, women are physically disadvantaged when in a threatening situation with a biological male. This also highlights that the risk of reoffending remains high, even within secure prison walls The UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls has highlighted the risk of male sexual predators abusing policies that allow self-identification into women’s single-sex spaces such as prisons. The UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Australian Dr Alice Jill Edwards, has previously also raised similar concerns in light of the Scotland fiasco that destabilised the Sturgeon government after public outrage over the placement of convicted rapist Isla Bryson in a female prison. While studies show that trans-identified male prisoners are more at risk of abuse in male prisons than non-transgender inmates, their protection should not come at the cost of women's safety. All vulnerable male prisoners must be appropriately accommodated within the male prison estate. Unlike other areas where sex-based rights have been gutted to appease transgender lobby groups, such as female bathrooms, sports and domestic violence refuges, women cannot opt out of shared prison spaces. Tear gas is a chemical weapon, usually deployed via canisters, grenades, or sprays, that causes irritation of the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. It is important to flush the eyes with water immediately upon exposure to tear gas. Water should be used to wash the face and eyes, and to be ingested to clear the throat and airways. There is no evidence that other popular remedies such as milk, baby shampoo, apple cider vinegar, antacids, or diluted baking soda are any better than water. In fact, some of these may be harmful. For instance, while a solution of three teaspoons of baking soda in 8 to 8.5 ounces of water can be sprayed on the face and mouth to neutralize the effects of tear gas, it may be an irritant to the eyes.
