💯 That's exactly what I'm hearing from friends & colleagues who are having in-depth discussions *with* their students about GenAI.

I always appreciate @cjdenial.bsky.social's insights on editorials! I also noticed that the author describes talking *to* students about GenAI but not *with* students. No easy answers here obvi but a students-as-partners approach could yield strategies beyond "more blue book exams."

Blue books and oral exams etc are definitely one way to respond to GenAI. I find it telling, however, that the OP here does not address disability at all. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/26/o...

Updated my @syracuseu.bsky.social Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence thrifted office decorations & snack dispensers with a back-to-school / apple-for-the-teacher theme. 🍎✏️🔔
Decorative items such as ceramic apples and a woven basket with school -themed pictures on it such as pencils and a chalkboard. A small metal container with school-related items on it, such as pencils and a calculator. A plastic apple with "#1 teacher" written on it.

A real hot teaching take in the NYT today by a professor who banned phones & laptops in class. He explained to students why phones are distracting, so of course everyone complied! They "loved it" & praised him to the skies in their evals! Just ban phones, why didn’t we think of that??

🗃️ Variation of this: I gave students one of my chapters w/no footnotes, asked where they thought footnotes should go: What type of source was used? What makes you think that? They have to consider how writing shows evidence vs. context vs. author’s voice. They liked it a lot and had great questions!

Just sharing the “Xtreme endnotes” assignment @parisnoire.bsky.social mentions here in case anyone else finds it helpful as we begin a new academic year.

FWIW, it’s a purely analog exercise in an AI-freaky world & my students have never not had fun doing it.✌🏽

My copy of the wonderful -Of Many Minds: Neurodiversity and Mental Health Among University Faculty and Staff- arrived! I'm honored to have the first essay in this collection; it's far past time for us to talk about all the minds that work (sometimes idiosyncratically, always creatively) in higher ed
A photograph of the cover of the book Of Many Minds. The main title is in bright blue, green, and red, and down the edges of the page you see a multitude of different pens, pencils, and highlighters, no two the same A photograph of the first page of an essay, by me, called "For Those Who Do Not Love the Archives."

Sometimes the Universe enjoys underlining a life lesson I need. I wrote a whole-a** book about things going wrong and I was still beside myself when something went wrong.
