Miller also does not intend to deliver anything to most of the people whose resentments he is exploiting
gehaines.bsky.social
Miller's is pretty similar to Lee Atwater's though. (And Atwater was a partner at Stone & Manafort's consulting firm).

There also really isn't a way around the fact that the DHS (and ICE and CBP) was established in 2003, and accumulated powers over 20 years due to justices Bush put on SCOTUS.

if someone has a valid hypothesis opposed to the consensus, I would hope they would submit it to a medical journal so it can be considered and rigorously tested by doctors."

1) doesn't cede expert authority
2) politely makes him look like a doofus for asking the Q

Hey lawyers, the next time Alito does this "aren't doctors wrong sometimes?" BS here is what you say:

"Yes, and like all sciences, medicine works best when any hypothesis supported by evidence is presented, so that it can be tested. Given the gravity of this public health issue,

It's Philly, Coach. That's a sign of respect.

I love Philadelphia

Dick Allen sang professionally in a high, delicate tenor. The tone and texture of his voice has drawn comparisons to Harptones' lead singer Willie Winfield. During Allen's time with the Sixties-era Phillies, he sang lead with a doo-wop group called The Ebonistics. "Rich Allen and The Ebonistics" sang professionally at Philadelphia night clubs. He once entertained during halftime of a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game. The Philadelphia Inquirer printed a review of his performance:” Continued with excerpt from Philly Inquirer article: “Here came Rich Allen. Flowered shirt. Tie six-inches (152 mm) wide. Hiphugger bell-bottomed pants. A microphone in his hands. Rich Allen, the most booed man in Philadelphia from April to October, when Eagles coach Joe Kuharich takes over, walked out in front of 9,557 people at the Spectrum last night to sing with his group, The Ebonistics, and a most predictable thing happened. He was booed. Two songs later though, a most unpredictable thing happened. They cheered Rich Allen. They cheered him as warmly as they have ever cheered him for a game-winning home run."”

There are adult volunteers who are counselors (usually adult leaders in troops for most badges or sometimes other people who do more unusual stuff like keep bees). Many of them are also taught at summer camps, where the camp staff can sign off on requirements.

When do we think the last time you could buy Arctic charr in Union Square was? www.gbif.org/occurrence/1...
screenshot from gbif database specimen page for an Arctic charr collected at an unknown date. Map shows that collection was made at Union Square in NYC. Specimen record info showing coordinates and a locality listed as "New York Market"

If you think an author's association with a university compromises them, and if you can even see the authors' university affiliation (which won't be the case if there is double-blind review!), there is a place at the end of a paper where you can suggest to the editor that a CoI be noted.
gehaines.bsky.social
Your premise here is that not being an employee of a university puts you outside of the academic community. That is that is simply not true.

Also, the university board won't know or care if you delay review for a paper.

The university board still wants there to *be a university* and the message has to be that signing this letter means you are no longer a university, you can't be in the academic community if you betray it.
gehaines.bsky.social
It’s directly relevant. If your contention is that the paper shouldn’t be reviewed because it doesn’t come from a university, that makes no sense because papers don’t have to come from university researchers to be reviewed.
gehaines.bsky.social
because they don’t like author 3’s institution, **I** am the person most hurt by that, and the higher ups at A3’s institution do not notice, and if they do they don’t care. You have to actually game out the consequences of your protest, here!
gehaines.bsky.social
Sure, I think not doing invited talks or workshops or whatever is fine and sends a clear message. But like, I’m the lead author on a manuscript right now that has 3 other authors from 2 other institutions. I’m also applying for jobs. If a potential reviewer decided to boycott review of our MS …
gehaines.bsky.social
You can write papers and get them published even if you don’t work at a university, though. Whether your papers get reviewed and whether or not you work at a university are unrelated concepts.
gehaines.bsky.social
Also, this is not what citations are for! They are there so readers can trace your work, not as a tool for distributing demerits that university boards will not notice or care about!

Come on people, get it together.
gehaines.bsky.social
Some of these response to this particular problem are good, but refusing to review or cite papers is only going to hurt people who had nothing to do with these decisions, including students, co-authors at other institutions, and editors.

2 years ago the first PhD student from my lab graduated. Last week we submitted his second chapter for review, a project that we collaborated on from start to end after the two of us independently converged on the same idea to test thermal tolerance in benthic & limnetic stickleback

It means that just playing in Citizens Bank Park *doubles* the Phillies’ chances of winning, compared to any other park.

Better than 2-to-1 home field advantage with an even record on the road is nuts
