Our study calls for considering immigrants' own experiences when monitoring their lives. We tend to have a rather narrow understanding of 'integration', neglecting immigrants' own experiences and instead focusing on their (economic) performance and closing "the gap" to the resident population.

(3/3): The stronger reactions are not migration-specific but shaped by immigrants' educational and social background. Our study thus informs the explanation of broader sociological patterns at the intersection of education and subjective well-being.

(2/3): Ethno-racial background does not make a difference: Reactions are similarly strong whether or not immigrants stand out visibly or culturally as foreigners.

Out now in #Migration Studies: One of the first studies that examines shifts in subjective well-being (SWB) in the course of international migration. We find evidence for increased SWB with the move, and elevated SWB in the first years after it. 1/2

We often tend to assume highly qualified immigrants are doing well 👍 However, they react particularly strong to unmet migration expectations 👎

D. Ruedin (UniNe) and I wrote a short blog post about it, and the potential consequences for both immigrants and host societies 👇
