Well it is usually algae, especially Chara, that produce the calcium carbonate bits that form the marl. So the local carbonate probably gave the water a high alkali content. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Interesting that it is quite common to get marls or diatomites in closed basins on landslides. Saw this on landslides in Peru, and lots of diatomites in the Columbia River Flood Basalts in the channeled Scablands. Sad that I will likely never run that trip again! Was thinking about that yesterday.
