It is not an animal story! It is VERY MUCH not an animal story. But it is spooky and weird and kinda makes me wish he’d done more Not Animal Stories.

(That said, The Ship’s Cat was a masterpiece and I can still recite large chunks of it from memory. So I guess I have two Adams entries.)

Hawthorne’s Blithedale Romance, rather than Scarlet Letter or Seven Gables.

Richard Adams’s The Girl in a Swing, absolutely nothing like his far more famous Watership Down and a HUGE surprise to anyone who picks it up hoping for more bunny stories.

I was lucky enough to catch an in school suspension for my reading crimes, back in the day. Which had to be served in…wait for it…the school library.

Taking a kid out of class for reading in class and putting them with all the books certainly teaches a lesson, but perhaps not the intended one.

My first copy of this was some 99
cent spinner rack Wal-Mart paperback edition done up to basically look like a Goosebumps cover, and it was not at ALL misleading.
