"Through intention or its absence, built by us or built for us, the very real and shared world we inhabit is built bit by bit each day. So is our work in education a world-building project."

So what is it about the world that is worth building?

The Legacy Museum, which is “perhaps the closest thing America has to a national slavery museum,” is free from government control and displays the “history that the Trump administration aims to de-emphasize—if not outright erase,” @clintsmithiii.bsky.social argues.

There are so many benefits to reading for pleasure, and is there anything better than having some time over the Christmas period to enjoy a good book?📚️

You can also share your love of books by donating to our Christmas Appeal, so that every child can have a book of their own.

Predicability, flexibility, connection and empowerment help to reestablish safety. Days after break: reset routines/norms, provide choices for engagement, reestablish feeling of "I see you & care about you," and encourage students to self-assess needs/set goals for the weeks ahead.
Pedagogically,

I don’t like forcing students do ‘rigorous’ things the days after long breaks. There’s often a feeling of malaise and a lot of trauma and we gotta make class a safe space again.

Community-building through conversation and games is how I re-enter the home stretch of the year.

Start your lesson with a blank spreadsheet to encourage exploration and inquiry.

Ask students to collect data and look for patterns before you explain the concept.

I spent October traveling to schools throughout the South talking to students about American history. What I found were young people who understand we can tell a story that includes both the positive and the negative. As one 8th grader in Memphis said, “Doesn’t seem that hard, just say both things.”
Tell Students the Truth About American History

Given the hunger and fear that this administration is inflicting upon so many children across the country, it has never been a more difficult time for schools to be good places for kids to walk into and it has never been a more important time, too.

And that both/and is overwhelming.

Reading Rainbow emphasis is encouraging kids to read. The focus is not on teaching them to read. The mission is reading should be fun!

We are all readers, worthy of literacy. LeVar Burton said “but you don’t have to take my word for it” because he wanted us to look to the books. That’s the beauty 💚
