“The Graceview Patient,” by @caitlinstarling.com is an unsettling slow-drip of paranoia, exhaustion and unease administered directly into the veins of unwitting readers. An ominous, generally feel-bad, clinical gothic, this one is out from @stmartinspress.bsky.social OCT 14TH

“Darker Days,” by Thomas Olde Heuvelt takes seasonal depression to new extremes and is not so much “darker,” as it is subsumed entirely by something black and bleak and void-like. Out Oct 23rd from @bantambooksuk.bsky.social and October 28th from @harperbooks.bsky.social

A fiery little number that will burn the back of its reader’s throats, redden their cheeks and leave them coughing and spluttering, “Fly On The Wall,” by Inigo Mort is precise, pacy and pretty damn good. Single sitting read, available on KU.

Beauty and rot, gilt and decay all feature in “The Works of Vermin,” by Hiron Ennes. With shades of Miéville but a palette that is completely its own, this one will ensure you never complain about an eight legged housemate again. @torbooksuk.bsky.social

“Spin A Black Yarn,” blew my mind, in terms of its prose, in terms of its imagery, in terms of its clever layers, subtle nods and sly winks, and proves @joshmalerman.bsky.social to be, not merely a wonderful writer, but a real wordsmith, and a master of his craft. @lordtbrffa.bsky.social

Horrific sci-fi with heart? Sold! Especially when it comes from @jonathanjanz.bsky.social. His upcoming release, Veil, succeeds through its personal, emotional flourishes, elevating this fast-paced survival story into the stratosphere. My review:

has a way with words, and I fall in love with every book she writes. This book Fiend, plays into all of my obsessions with the Sackler family dynasty. Alma creates characters that we almost feel sorry for, they are not flat despicable characters, she makes them real. 5⭐️

I got to chat with @claymcleod.bsky.social about his collection Acquired Taste, out from @titanbooks.bsky.social September 9th. We discuss the selection of these 25 short stories, our favourites among them, and then slag off Jurassic World for a bit. Wherever you get your podcasts!

A year after I first set foot in 8114 it was a delight to discuss it with the man himself, @joshuathehull.bsky.social
8114 came out from @clashbooks.bsky.social 8/26 and is genuinely terrifying. Josh and I discuss growing up there, flawed characters and epistolary elements, amongst other things.

With Fiend, @almakatsu.bsky.social fully displays the horrors of the corporate workspace, the malevolence behind the wealthy and power-hungry, and the dreadful gender dynamics lurking in the background with her. My review:

Fiend Review: When Power Has Teeth
Fiend covers much ground in examining the horrors of power, wealth, and a landscape operating without a system of checks and balances.

If you haven’t done Heart Shaped Box by Hill yet- that one. I continue to rave about 8114 by Joshua Hull. Anything by Jonathan Janz is fun, Children of the Dark duology maybe? And Halloween itself: Dead Leaves- Kealan Patrick Burke, Blood Sugar- Daniel Kraus and The Halloween Store- Ronald Kelly.
