The local tourism is insane. Who needs a plane ticket to the USA when you can take a train an be in the Dolomites, Rome, or Naples within four hours?
Well-being much higher. Very few obese people
Amazing sense of community that comes with life being lived in a public space full of people
No guns

Advantage to Italy:

Unbelievably less crime
Zero zombies/crazies — even the beggars are polite
The streets are alive! People walk around! You run into friends at night, people do social activities in the city
They work a hell of a lot less

I spent a lot of time with my cousins who I estimate are 80th percentile of Italian income. About where my parents are in the USA.

Pros of the USA:

Bigger house. Nicer appliances in the house
Cars are nicer
Stay at nicer hotels
Can travel a bit more freely
Less worried about costs day to day

The cops laugh in my face when I call them about homeless people screaming at women on the train, so I can only imagine what they’d have to do to “provoke state violence”. It’s the same five guys committing felonies every day; they don’t really seem to go to jail

Agreed. Just saying that when you’re getting victimized by these people every day, while one side offers the box and the other side offers the same failed outreach programs you can’t blame people for wanting the box

I think it’s more that when the average person is victimized by a homeless person their understandable response is “why aren’t they in jail”

If we want to change this attitude we need to actually effectively address homelessness

Great transit, narrow streets, plenty of trees, high social services, and aggressive incarceration are all needed to build support for YIMBYism
