I post about urbanism and mostly just other random thoughts
Urbanists have been saying for years that CAFE regulations are stupid and are largely responsible for the glut of oversized cars currently destroying our cities and air quality

Why didn’t Biden do something about it? Because he knew this would be the reaction from the base:
I'm sorry I keep quote-tweeting this, but I am beside myself hearing someone from a Republican administration that is based on alleged American Greatness, saying that now, finally, we can return to the 1970s. bsky.app/profile/atru...
Sean Duffy on slashing fuel economy standards: "This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s station wagon. Maybe a little wood paneling on the side. We can bring back choice to consumers."

Border should open both ways but there is this bizarre perception people have that allowing Palestinians to escape is bad.

It’s actually a crime that the borders haven’t been open to allow escape this whole time!
Israel has announced it will reopen the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt in the next few days. However, the border will only open in one direction: for Palestinians to exit. Israeli American human rights lawyer Sari Bashi says Israel’s goal is to “continue the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.”
Israel Will Reopen Rafah Border Crossing — Only for Palestinians to Leave
A human rights lawyer says the move validates fears that Israel’s goal is to “continue the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.”…

Most of the time, immigration and tourism are very positive-sum and good to places like New York City or big regions like California.

There are exceptions though — only so many people can visit Yosemite and Yellowstone each year. I’m surprised we already didn’t have a U.S. resident discount!
hadn't even seen this, this is beyond awful
National parks have SO MANY people from other countries (since they get real vacations!)

And they spend a lot of money on hotels, food, souvenirs, etc.

This is unbelievably dumb, it will destroy entire tourist towns

After a month in Italy I have to wonder: how did we ever get psyopped into thinking the US was better than Europe?

What I hear a lot from the “elites” in my social circle, in private, is questions about why they should stick their neck out to save a Constitution the American people proved a year ago that they aren’t worthy of
ordinary americans are filming ice agents and trying to save their neighbors. for all the hemming and hawing during 2024 about how democracy was an elite concern, the elites gave up far more quickly than average people.

Being a billionaire in the United States feels basically identical whether you have $10B or $100B, but feels very different if you can sexually harass your au pair and she can quit and get a different job vs if she is desperate to keep her job and has to put up with it because the economy is shit.
it is because they want to impoverish the country! they don’t want high end manufacturing. they want americans working subsistence wages making t shirts and clothes hangers
This is part of what’s so insane. As they talk about re-shoring and manufacturing they are actively trying to destroy an entire us manufacturing industry that already exists.

Can someone explain to me why Walter Clayton isn’t a lottery pick? He looks like the second coming of Steph Curry out there

Easy to forget how small a city Austin is, but there are still large tracts of ranch land within a 30 minute drive of downtown

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people.

Good trade.

The responses to this are so mealy-mouthed. Yes this is true, and yes that’s the whole point.

Driving in Manhattan is like having a private beach villa or skiing in Aspen. Everyone can’t do it. Price is the fairest way to assign the spots. Sorry!
The congestion pricing will affect lower income folks overwhelmingly. After all, the wealthy will pay whatever it costs, but poor folks will think twice about driving in the city. Segregation.

California is better than Texas in almost every way.

It shows the critical importance of housing that this single issue outweighs all the rest

Recently here in Houston an apartment building in a rich neighborhood was proposed. The whole community came out hard against it. Protests, yard signs, community meetings, everything. Lawsuits were even filed (1/2)

The San Diego and Fort Lauderdale metros present a very interesting contrast in urbanism of space constrained coastal areas

It takes all of about 15 minutes to realize why one is growing and relatively affordable and why one is stagnant and insanely expensive

One of the things that makes Houston so great is that despite frothing opposition from every community group and the richest neighborhood in the city the Ashby high rise is getting built and tons of people will have new homes

Actual innovative tech (AI, Ozempic, solar power) gets a lot less hype than fake tech (crypto, NFTs, "the Uber of X") because if the tech works people are quietly trying to be the first to make money off of it
