"Encouraging natural regeneration remains a major challenge...because it can mean reduced land available for other uses."

If we want to restore 215 Mha of land into forests, it's likely we need to also reduce agricultural land (cropland and pasture) by ~215 Mha even while feeding more people. 1/
In the midst of a global tree-planting frenzy, a different approach says that the best way to restore forests is to allow them to restore themselves. In a lifetime of observing tropical and temperate forests, I have come to think this is true. Not all forests can restore themselves, but many can.
215 million hectares of forest – an area bigger than Mexico – could grow back by itself, if we can just leave it alone
It’s vital we find cost-effective ways to get and keep more trees in the ground. Our research looked at where natural regeneration is likely to be successful due to environmental conditions.

Untrue food thing #1: Local food is more climate-friendly.

Transport is a very small part (5-10%) of a food’s GHG footprint. Growing food efficiently easily trumps growing it locally.

Growing on large farms, in places with good weather, is most efficient.

You want to reduce the carbon footprint of your food? Focus on what you eat, not whether your food is local
“Eat local” is a common recommendation to reduce the carbon footprint of your diet. How does the impact of what you eat compare to where it's come from?

Rising temperatures are affecting production of Arabica, the most popular coffee bean. Arabica production is expected to decrease 80% by 2050.
As a popular coffee bean is threatened by rising temperatures, Florida researchers try a replacement
The Robusta coffee bean might have to widely replace Arabica in the next 30 years.

"...global open trade has delivered levels of food security unmatched in human history."
My Trade Secrets today. There's no general global food crisis. Output is up, prices are down. The Ukraine shock was a blip on top of a commodity cycle. Putin failed to weaponise famine.

Why? Free trade is great. Global markets have cushioned shocks, not amplified them. For real.
